Hello Fellow Coin Enthusiasts!
We all try to pursue perfection when it comes to our coin technique. I've been working on this ROV inspired from Mickey Silver's SUV. I don't claim to know what he is doing or any of that, but I just wanted some help in improving my own. Here is a link to the short clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXWZcmvacAc Any thoughts are welcome! Thanks! J |

Thanks Loren! Anything I could do to improve it?

I can't really see much, but that doesn't mean you can't improve it. I'm not a great teacher to be honest. The only thing I suggest is not making it so obvious how far your thumb goes behind the coin, that makes it look unnatural. As I said, I do it the same way you do, but I try not to make that part obvious because it look peculiar. I'm a huge advocate of making coin magic look natural. That's just me though. Still looks great man.
Have always loved your stuff. Keep posting. |

I second What Loren said, it looks great to me too. Can't really see too much else to improve upon other than what Loren said about your thumb.
Keep up the good work. Gerald

In my humble opinion... It is not so much the thumb that makes it look unnatural. I think its the excessive pointing on the left hand that makes it look unnatural. This works for Mickey because it reflects his personality that is why he is so unique. I believe that once the idea is clear that you have placed the coin in the other hand, there is no need to point it out further. The whole business of the ROV goes beyond just what we see physically. It is also the "before: and "after the ROV that sells it. On the physical or visual side.... to achieve more BURN.. experiment with having more windows on the receiving hand. A casual gesture with the right hand and shift of energy on the left hand through body weight transfer perhaps may help sell it
I wil try to make a video soon. Meanwhile here is one of the ROV I use. No presentation here. Just the move. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nSIoZkDbGA Cheers and Mabuhay from Manila! Rannie

JF, you do it good. I see you have a little Mickey Silver going on there but that's OK, you do the movements well enough.
I would say generally it's not so simply about how well you do an ROV but what are you using it for. It's really just a ways to a means, though much is made about it. I taught it to my nephew, he's 10 and by the time he left for the weekend he was doing it pretty darn good. So most people actually make this happen a lot better than they think, especially since most of it happens in the spec's mind. As to your video, I'd say slow down a little, lessen your hand movements and be confident that spec's see only what you want them to see of the presentation. Other than that, pretty good. Oh and welcome to the Café.

Thanks for the posts guys! I will see what I can do about the thumb placement. Rannie makes a great point with the pointing The patter I use for this is "if I give it a tap... nothing happens (show coin still in hand)... if I give it two taps that's when the magic happens..." so for me there is a reason why all the pointing/tapping is happening with the right hand. Rannie that is a awesome ROV! Thanks for the tips MB, I will keep those thoughts in mind for the future!

J,
With that patter that motivates the tap or the point.... It is great!

Thanks Rannie! Usually my patter justifies any kind of motions that I do when I do my magic... I'm more of a high energy performer so I move a lot...

Regarding that burn that Rannie mentioned: starting with the left hand palm down and the right palm up, and then as the pass is made the right hand turns palm down as it places(!)the coin and the left turns palm up as it receives(!) will also give some good burn on the coin.

In Mickey's hands though... nothing is out of the ordinary. Watching it a second time, you could very well utilize the Liwag subtlety/ramsey subtlety here. Either way, you're getting some very good advice on here. Good stuff. It's helping me out too! |

Hi J,
I'm pleasantly surprised to see another person working on this style of ROV. I think it looks pretty good. Try and see if you can attend Mickey's next lecture (when the time comes). He is starting to explain the reasoning behind the various feints and gestures behind his coin magic, the pointing gesture being one of them. In order to incorporate those gestures, you must understand exactly why he does them (there is a very practical, logical reason, it is not merely a personality quirk). He goes over this in his lecture notes. I recommend that you purchase a set. Otherwise, if you try and mimic the movements without knowing the "why" behind them, you will not be taking full advantage of them. Good job, I enjoyed watching this!-Evan |

Hey Evan thanks!
I do have Mickey's lecture notes and I've taken sometime to really try to understand Mickey's logic. I know exactly what you are talking about! Everything you said is a good point thanks for the help! J |
