Hi
I was just wondering how many magiccafe members are subscribers to the Genii Magazine? I was thinking about buying a one year order(12 issues). Do they teach a few tricks in every monthly mag? What else is in there? Thanks Joe |

There is usually something taught in every issue. There are also very good articles.
I subscribed at one time but I changed over to Magic Magazine. But both magazines are good.

They do have a web site that you can find some more information about the magazine:
http://www.geniimagazine.com I enjoy the magazine and Richard Kauffman has done an excellent job since he took over. |

I don't subscribe but I buy every issue at the local shop. You'll find tricks, reviews, magic news, etc.
Buy a couple issues of Genii and Magic to see which style you prefer before subscribing. Or get both.

Genii is best at giving you in-depth articles. They proved to me their quality with the 6 page Alan Warner article in the current July issue; I happen to be a Warner collector. Richard has improved the magazine with better illustrations, choice material, and great magic.

If you're looking for tricks it's Genii hands down. Richard Kaufman has been around the world of hard code SOH guys for decades and has more material than he can print.
Look at the Hanging Coins routine using the JWGrip in the June issue. He's had that for a couple of years and just got around to publishing it. MAGIC has some very good feature/profile articles but overall it's Genii for depth. |

I subscribe to both Magic and Genii and like both for different reasons.
Magic has good articles on performers and I always the column by Silly Billy, Jim Sisti, and Jim Steinmeyer. Genii also has great articles and always features some effects from those profiled. All of the tricks presented are very commercial. The tricks in Magic have a diamond rating from 1 (easiest) to 5(hardest). It seems like the tricks presented in Magic (usually 4 0r 5's) emphasize sleghts rather than being commercial tricks. In other words if you want a trick to fool magicians, it's in Magic, if you want some tricks to entertain an audience you are probably better off with Genii. Just my opinion and opinions are just like noses ---- most everyone has one!

I subscribed to both Magic and Genii for the first time about a year and a half ago. When it came time to renew, I renewed both. Magic is glossier and lighter reading, but I have used material from it, and learned a lot about the history of magic and current personalities as well.
Genii had a more academic feel to it. The articles have more depth, and the issues often have an extended theme or focus on a particular performer/creator. I still do not belong to SAM or IBM and had thought about joining one instead of renewing one of my subscriptions, but then a friend gave me several years of back issue Linking Ring magazines. It does not compare to either Genii or Magic in terms of a reading experience. I haven't seen any issues of M.U.M. So I don't know how it compares, but if I join IBM I will be keeping my subscriptions to both Genii and Magic. |

Since Richard Kaufman has taken Genii over, the magazine has improved greatly. Good magic from some great magicians, good interviews, good reviews. However, I cannot understand for the life of me why he allows people like Jamy Ian Swiss and Bill Goldman to continue to write their mindless dribble in a quality magazine. Both are legends in their own minds.

Genii is definitely a magazine worth having. If you have never seen one get a couple of back issues.

Genii, since the Kaufman takeover, is the best magazine on magic going, bar none, IMO. More "meat" then the others and while not as "slick" as magic, it's a matter of substance over style as far as I'm concerned. Notoriously late under the mantle of the Larsen family, Richard sees to it that it always on time--usually early, in fact! And Swiss and Goldman are legends in the minds of a lot of people besides themselves!!!
