Can someone (probably Bill) tell me about bright chrome finishes?
Does it patina in any way, need to be polished, fade, etc? |

I'm not an expert in electroplating; however, I can Google with the best of them. Here is a link that will tell you almost everything you want to know about chrome plating, and a lot of stuff that you probably didn't need to know.
http://www.finishing.com/faqs/chrome.html Short answer -- if it is put on correctly, it probably won't patinize. It may need to be wiped off occasionally, and it probably won't fade. I have a couple of sets of cups in my collection in which the surfaces were not correctly prepared. If any oil or grease is left on the surface, the plating can peel off. If there is acid underneath the surface, the metal can corrode and begin to show through the plating. The platers that most cup makers use know how to prevent these unfortunate occurrences.

Great site, Bill.
BTW, I personally prefer nickel plate. A good friend of mine bought some fabulous antique magic props. They needed cleaning but instead he had the CHROME PLATED and, IMHO, ruined them. Nickel plate would have been better as it would have retained the "olde" look.

So do I, but modern nickel plating doesn't have the wearability that the old nickel plating had. There have been changes in the process, regarding bath that they use for the plating. Also, some people are allergic to nickel.
I wonder how Rhodium holds up. That's popular in jewelry.

Thanks bill!
That site is interesting. I was looking at getting the paul fox minis in a bright chrome finish. I want to get something besides mirror copper for every set of cups. I would get silver if I had the money but... |

Pete, Bill:
I have the last set of the first run of Johnny Paul cups that Pete produced. I have been considering having them nickle plated. From your posts on this thread, perhaps I should abandon that idea. Your thoughts? Dwight Powell |

Go for it... I had a few nickel plated for someone and they loved 'em.
