I remember Derwood Kerby from WAY before Candid Camera with Allen Funt. Maybe it was the Gary Moore show?
I remember when television had John Cameron Swayze, Milton Berle Texaco Star Theatre,Captain Video and Howdy Doody. One channel. Before Ed Sullivan. Did he announce quite a bit in radio too? |

Oh yea man, I used to watch Derwood Kerby on the radio all the time.
How many of us actually know someone else who's first name is Derwood?

Gary Moore had a regular network variety show in the 50's I think. His crew-cut seemed a little out of place, even then, but he seemed a genuine nice guy, mildly comic. He had one of the most popular shows at the time...

I'm showing my age. I vividly remember him as Alan Funt's partner on Candid Camera.

Before Gary Moore had his network variety show he had a morning show, which consisted of Derwood, and a changing group of semiregular guests, and of course the most famous semiregular guest was Carol Burnette. Gary Moore wore a bow tie back when bow ties were cool, if you could imagine that.

Derwood Kirby was the announcer and sidekick to Garry Moore. Garry was from Baltimore,my hometown and was a cousin to my father. Garry was good friends with another Baltimorean, Milbourne Christopher. It was on Garry Moore show with Mr.Kirby that legendary Carol Burnett got her big break.

There are about a half a dozen us old fogies here who have said the same thing that you just did. Of course you are the only one with the home town, family slant.

Several posters have misspelled his last name.
No one has correctly spelled his first name. Durward Kirby |

Mr Angello, It is probably because I am an old fogie that senility has caused me to repeat what everyone has already said without bothering to read all the previous posts.

Pretty neat! Yeah, once in awhile I remember things way past like they happened an hour ago. Then again, once in awhile I can't remember what I had for dinner by the time I go to bed... thanks for the clarification!

I think the only time I have heard Derwood used is when Agnes Moorehead used to tease Darrin with it in Bewitched.
