Hey Kimmo.
When Jeff Dunham was at Wolverhampton a few weeks ago. One of his guys came to some on at the back of me and took their camera off them. Took out the chip then gave them the camers back, because they thought he was taping the show. I got away with taking pictures though.

Interesting about Dunham's security doing that. I get it, but it was a YouTube video of Jeff working out Achmed at a comedy club that really put his career in overdrive. He was already doing very well of course, but that helped move him from headlining comedy clubs to selling out theatres and then stadiums. It wasn't out of the blue, he had a repertoir of solid, funny, material and characters, 30 years or so in the clubs, but "Silence! I keel you!" going viral made him a household name. The YouTube thing works both ways. I think if I'd have been 14 when YouTube came out instead of 44, I'd have seen immediately what an incredible thing it is, what potential it has. Instead, it's taken me 5 years to figure that out.

Jimmy. Are you sure they took anything out of the camera or deleated anything? I saw them talk to someone behind you, I was the row behind them, but I didn't think they took the camera. I might be wrong I was watching Jeff.I only took one picture, I knew you'd get better shots, also I find that when I'm taking photos and especially videos I'm not really "there" I miss so much of the shoe.
I do remember once at a Keith Jarret concert, the jazz pianist. He stopped the show and did a big speach about the guy who was recording the show cos he could see the red light. Turned out it was someones digital watch. What a plonker!

If someone politely asks, I usually let them.
If they don't ask, I stop them. I ask that it not be posted to YouTube.

I agree with Ken Scott. At birthday parties, I feel like I'm a guest in their home. It's their party. As a parent, I video taped everything as my daughter grew up. I'd hate to tell a parent they can't video tape my show at little Johnny's party. I mean, come on. As for it being posted on YouTube, I should be so lucky.

I think having a show taped is fine, but the client should, firstly ask, and secondly offer a copy of tape to the performer.
Obviously, as we all know, for all their promises - we never get the tape, but there is no harm in asking. |

I allow photos and video taping of my private, in-home performances. I think I have a note in my performance agreement that any video or still photos taken by the family is/are to be used for personal use only and not to be published commercially. I DO require the shots be taken from the front (audience view) and not from behind me or directly to the side so as to protect the angles and thus integrity of the "back-stage" sight lines of many effects. Only once have I found it necessary to stop a show and ask a parent to move from behind me to shoot their video.

I make this announcement at the beginning of my show. "If anyone is caught taking photos or videos of the performance, they will be welcome to. If you send me a copy by email, I will send your kid a free magic kit."
My thinking is that when I am dead and gone if my kids come a across a video of a show that I did 30 years ago, they will get a kick out of it. I have called the local cable station and have had them come out to my shows and shoot it for local cable access. Great for the venue and for me. When your on some local cable station they often run the show 4 or 5 times a week, for a couple of weeks. I will even mention to the audience that we are filming for TV and that always notches up the excitement. Make sure you also mention your web site and phone number part of your show during the filming. I also give out a digital camera to an audience member and make them the show photographer. All of the photos on my website were taking by audience members. A ten year old in the front row can get some great shots. The more video and photos the better. Gordon |
