Can anyone help me with ideas? I used to do kids magic shows with my wife. She was the clown, and towards the end of the show, I had her do the coloring book while I loaded a bunny in a case and a dove in the balloon to dove. But now she is divorcing me, which is a another story ... but I need tips on how I can load the bunny and dove by myself towards the end of the show. I was thinking a cup drinking game, but that might be too fast? Any tips?

Hula hoop contest and, after you load, come back and do linking hula hoops, and then your livestock productions.

Hula hoop contest - good, but don't have the hula hoops. Humm, they would not fit in my "magic carts" ... but, yes, I think a contest is good. What other contests are there? But I see how hula hoops would be perfect!

As this isn't really an animal question, as you know how to load the animals, I suggest you ask the question in the Little Darlings section.
A dance contest is also good. Do you have a backdrop, or will you be loading in another room? I also wonder why you can't start the show with the animals as opposed to ending. If using a larger animal production, you can show it empty at the beginning and produce the animal at the end by just not showing it empty again. This would allow the animal (probably the rabbit) to have the whole box to hang out in. |

I think it is an animal question. The ultimate goal is getting the doves and rabbit loaded. The suggestions so far have been how to occupy the kids while your doing the loads.

I have literally seen magicians load animals 'right in front' of people before, and no one knows the difference. Most people think that if we do something in the 'open,' it must not be a secret because we have nerve enough to do it when they are looking right at us. The magicians I have seen do this have a suitcase type table where they keep their animals during their show. The effect they do BEFORE the effect involving the animal, when they reach back into the suitcase table to get their prop, they set the animals up for the next effect while they are pulling out the first effect beforehand. I know, sounds confusing...ummm...say I have a dove I want to produce, but my dove has been viewing the show from another angle per say, but before the dove is going to appear for everyone, I may be doing the Tipsy Turvy bottles first. So when I go to get the Tipsy Turvy bottles and containers, my dove is preparing for its appearance - make sense?
I am sure there are plenty more ways to get it done, but I always try to keep it simple. I do plenty of 'get ready' in front of people, and they have no idea. Why? Because I don't make it look sneaky, so they figure it isn't.....*smile*. |

At birthday parties, I have a parent of the child make all the children sing "Happy Birthday" in Italian (our language), in English (most children learn this song at school) and in Chinese (nobody speaks Chinese, so they just make something up, so it's funny), and this gives me plenty of time to load the bunny.
If it's a public show and I don't have an assistant, I blow some balloons, put some music on, have the kids throw the balloons to one another and, when the music stops, the people or person who have the balloons will come to help me. Again, plenty of time to load the bunny. |

Excellent, many ideas here - this place is the best - and I love the way most magicians have the same goodhearted spirit - of helping each other out! Maybe it is the reason why most of us love the feeling of making other people feel good or happy, kids having fun seeing something funny or confusing and magically!
Alpha, yes, I had been thinking of that, like loading the dove in the balloon to dove during my last trick before the animals, as the dove can last longer in there (in Miami, the heat is crazy; this is an outdoor show in a park ). The bunny goes into a bunny cylinder, but it barely fits in there as it's bigger now - lol. I'm always so nervous before a show, thinking of all that can happen. I don't know why I stress it so much! lol Well, I haven't done it for a long time, almost two years - and this is my first show all alone!! So, I don't wanna change my routine too much!! I feel like I'm stressing it too much!! lol But, that maybe good! On 2010-05-16 16:07, MagicJac wrote: Excellent, yes, I was over-thinking it - was able to load them no probs. I actually timed my loading and realized it only took me 50 -55 secs to load them, so... But yesterday's show was a milestone for me, as this is my first all-alone show - also had not done any shows for, like, two years... I forgot what I good felling it was!!And this one was all by myself - even though I know there is a lot I can add and cut - this was a Milestone !! Thank you, GOD, and thanks all!!! |

Congrats on your re-entry to performing!
If you have the right character, you can have great fun while doing the dirty work. You'll have to be able to get the kids to do something you "don't" want them to do while you're not looking - Silly Billy's book, 'Seriously Silly,' explains how to do this well. As an example, you tell your volunteer that you need to get something for the next trick but, whatever they do, do NOT touch or move something, etc. While popping up and down behind your table every few seconds like a gopher on the look-out, you'll have plenty of time to load while playing it up. Try this: Put a can of spring snakes on a side table, and tell your volunteer to watch over the can while you're getting something for the next trick....but whatever they do, DON'T open it because if they do....well, it's too crazy to explain, but DON'T open it! If you don't need a volunteer, tell the whole audience; someone will surely sneak up to open it! Keep popping up and down until you have your load set; you can either wait until you doubt they'll open it, you hear them open it while behind the table, or you think you've milked it enough. If no one opens the can, thank them for not opening it because if they had....(open it yourself without thinking and let the spring snakes spring out and hit your face)!

Congrats on your show, have you had a chance to work with your new doves yet?
