Maybe it's just the trailer, but for as good as the effect seems I just can't get excited about it.

I think the idea behind it looks very good, but am I the only one that thinks that the hands are in close contact with the deck for way to long?

Hey guys, thanks for talking about the distribution move. I certainly have found great uses for it and hope you find some creative new effects with the move. Let me try to answer a few of the concerns about the DT that people have been talking about lately.
1. Angle Problems: Some people have said that there are angle problems from the left side. The angles problems are there only if the deck is not positioned in a way to hide the angles. This is not to say that you'll be in a weird grip either. Just like Paul Cummin's Side Steal technique the DT has similar "angle issues". As you know, they are easily covered by how the cards are held. In performance, in order to further hide any “problems”, I bring the cards closer to my body as I make a quick comment to a spectator. Of course, this is scripted in the routine so as to not appear unnatural. Bottom line, it has angle problems if you let it have angle problems, just like any other move in magic. I've done this move for my audiences and I’ve never been called on it (not once to be honest...even though I have been called on the Side Steal years ago!) 2. The hands being on the deck for too long: This is something that I really don't see a problem with. I say that because in actual performance I have held those cards for minutes at a time without anyone looking at the cards (you know, the suspicious look that audiences give to the hands when they sense something is or could happen?) However, the move happens in less than 3 seconds at the most. Technically speaking, this move has two beats, so it really should take one second per beat to do it. If you still feel that your hands are too close to the deck for too long, try just doing that in performance without doing anything. Just hold it, and talk to them. You will see that, unless you start to telegraph with your body language (getting nervous and bringing attention to the fact), they won't care at all. It's just you in a natural position. Remember: Nothing is happening...so why should they suspect? Why run when not being chased? Ever played cards with laymen? Many times I observed that when we are playing cards, and a conversation is brought up at the table while somebody is holding the cards, they typically will hold the cards with two hands. The conversation goes on, and that person is still holding the cards with two hands, sometimes even squaring them here and there. To me it’s a really natural thing to do, but I’ve found that some magicians don’t think so. All I can suggest is try it out and see what works for you. 3. Lyle's review: Actually, I'd say it's fairly accurate. The only thing missing, and the part that I still wish I could have done, is to add more performance-tips. The things that make a performer a performer, such as the tempos in routines, the beats and how to put them in a trick, how to use the DT in the off beats and how to create those off beats without having to script them, and the actual patters and performances for all of them, etc. I did do that to an extent, especially with cutting to the aces, but I really wished I could have flooded that DVD with more of those tips than the technical stuff. You would have been looking at a 3-4 hour DVD I think as I tend to talk a lot when it comes to that topic! Then again, I was told that this DVD is to focus on the technique, so the theory and performance advice had to take a back seat. Besides, why use my patter when you can come up with one that suits you? But, why take my word for it? (Because I know magicians...you won't ). There will be several reviews coming soon, in MAGIC, Genii (perhaps Tom Frame if the magazine isn't already reviewing it) 4. This isn't really an effect that is being presented. It's a technique, and one that has been on my repertoire for a while now. I don't know how I can prove to you that it's a technique that I actually use in my performances other than to tell you that I do it in my close-up show. Theron had the pleasure (or the misfortune?) of seeing me do this technique (or not seeing? magic, so complicated...) in front of magicians and lay audiences at the Magic Garage in San Jose, CA last year. So yeah...it works, and it isn't "a magician's move" either. It’s a worker's move, and one that I am confident in. So why isn't it working for other magicians? Why are they having trouble with it according to some? Why do they think that it's quirky? Answer: They've known of it and been practicing it for what...two weeks now? Must I say more? I didn’t get this move entirely smooth until about a year of practice. Then again, I was making the move as I went on, so that might have taken longer. I remember JC Wagner and Paul Cummins seeing me do this move when I was around 17 years old (when was that? Yesterday you little punk? hehe) and telling me that it needed a lot more work because I was struggling with the insertion of the cards. Last March I saw JC at Magic Con and showed it to him again. His answer: “Oh $hit!...and you can quote me on that!” All I’m saying is that it just takes practice, just like any other move, to get it. It feels weird, I know, but I’m confident that you’ll get it! |

I think that second teaser looks amazing. True, the deck is covered, but it doesn't appear as if anything is happening under the cover. Covering something before a magical moment isn't bad in itself - it's often what magicians do, sometimes with a silk or foulard, and sometimes with a hand. As long as you're not obviously fidgeting around and doing "work," then where's the harm? It almost looks like you're transferring the magic through the palm of your hand, followed by the "tah-dah" moment.
Now appearing nightly in my basement.

New Contest for the DVD:
On May 14th my DVD Quantum Mechanics was released. We announced that the first 100 would be signed, with one of them containing a private online session with me. As an added bonus, another DVD was my own personal copy with a personal note in it. Well, these DVDs sold out incredibly fast! (thanks for that guys!) and it left A LOT of people sending messages in regards to how they were a bit disappointed that they didn’t get to be among the 100. So, because I don’t want to leave people out in the cold, I am doing my own contest to win another private online session with me! Here is what you have to do: 1. You need to take a picture of yourself (your face must show) holding a copy of Quantum Mechanics and post it on your profile picture of Facebook until the winner is announced (Im thinking July 1st). 2. Tag me on that picture so I can know that you want to participate. If you don’t tag me, I don’t know you did it! 3. On July 1st, which is enough time I think to let everyone know about this and be able to participate (and is easy for me to remember!), I will write down everyone’s names and randomly select somebody. I will get a hold of you and we’ll plan when to meet then! Sounds good? It’s simple right? So if you got a DVD and didn’t get into the first 100, this gives you a chance to participate in something. Even if you did get a signed copy (the first 100) you can still participate. In other words, ANYONE who has a copy of the DVD can participate! You can purchase my DVD from Dan and Dave if you haven't already: http://store.dananddave.com/quantum-mech......ant.html Good luck! |

This certainly looks like a tidy way to end off a routine I do from Jack Carpenter, "No Table Aces", I think it's called.

Well, there are several tricks that can be improved with this move or streamlined. That's one of the things that I think, and hope, that magicians will find this technique useful for.

I was totally turned on by the move but because I am working on several difficult sleights something in me just turned off while I watched it. It kind of looked... sketchy to me for some reason but yes the angles are good and the dvd as always from DBsquared is fantastic quality |

Thanks! I haven't seen this one yet. (How could they butcher my name when it's on the stinking DVD? )
Kind of strange to me to see some reviews (not Tom's) that say that this move wouldn't be used by a pro...when I use it in my show...........I guess it didn't have enough for them? Does this mean that pros don't do things that take chops to pull off? It's not that hard either...is it? I do it in the offbeats as many moves ought to be done (really...your double lift isn't invisible...) The reason why I released this technique was for people to have space for exploration. It's fresh territory for people to discover new things, which is something that I felt was an exciting thing. Oh well, I'm proud of this DVD and the technique, and I hope that you guys find it to be of use or at least provide you some fun. |
