I want to be notified if anyone posts a reply to a thread I post in. I don't see this option in the preferences. Is it really obvious and I missed it?

If you start the topic, there is a check box under your original post that allows notification of replies. If you didn't start the thread, then this option is not available.

That's a shame. Most forums allow you to be notified about any thread you post in. If I post a comment on a thread I want to know if others respond.

In your case, since you only have 12 posts in a year, it's a simple matter to just do a search on your name and take a quick look to if there are any responses.
Of course the more posts you have, the harder this becomes.

Is this an attempt to be helpful or a dig? In any case even with my paultry postings it's already difficult. When you search by your name you get a list of your postings but it does not show if someone has responded or who the last poster was. So I have to check each thread one by one. I really don't understand why the forum would be set up this way. |

Sorry if my comment was taken the wrong way. What I meant was that with just 12 posts, it would be easy to see where you have posted and scroll through that topic. The more posts you have, the more difficult that process would be.
You are correct in that searching your name doesn't show who has posted to the topic after you but you can click on the topic rather than the post and easily scroll through that forum. Again, the more posts you have made the more difficult it would be. On the surface, let's assume you post in a popular topic. Some forums get 25 or more posts each day. Does this mean you want 25 pm's or 25 emails throughout the day. If the option was to use the PM system and you didn't visit for several days, your PM boxes would overflow and freeze. I'm sure there are technical ways to solve this problem but at the present time, I don't believe this type of change is on the hot list.

Thanks David,
I appreciate your replies. I was recently dealing with a difficult person on this forum and I got a bit paranoid with you. I'm not usually that thin skinned. I've been in lots of forums and I think all of them email me when someone replies to MY post. (That is, you just get notified for the post after yours). Not when someone posts to the thread. It works great. Overloaded mailboxes is not a problem. |

No problem and no offense taken. We are looking at post nofications but the tech folks have a very limited amount of time to spend here. They are volunteers just like everyone else on staff.

I'm a new user, but I've already posted 73 messages, and having to manually check each of the threads I post in day after day has already become a huge pain. I don't know what I'll do when I get up to hundreds or thousands of messages. Quote:

That email would contain links to each thread in which the given user posted for which there was activity that day. So, for example, if a given user had post 500 messages in 100 threads, and 5 of those threads had seen activity today, only one email with links to each of those 5 threads would be sent out today. With this solution, the user's mailbox will not be flooded with emails, and the load on the Café's servers should be reasonable. Load on the Café's servers could be further lessened by sending emails even less frequently (a maximum of one email a week or even a month) for inactive users. The interval between notification emails could even be automatically changed to be inversely proportional to the amount of time since the user's last login or last post, and that period could be exponentially lengthened the more inactive the user is. |

I'm sure if you have the solution and the web coding expertise to assist in integrating it into the Café software, our volunteer web masters would greatly appreciate having someone else help shoulder the load.
