Hansel,
Going back about 6-7 years ago, I did a childrens show for my youngest son's Kindergarten class. Well, the other K classes were invited in as well, and there was a young boy who sat right up front. He was wearing a baseball cup and had a smile that made the sun seem dim. The hat should have given me a clue, but it didn't at the time. This youngster was laughing and clapping throughout the show, and there was no doubt that he was enjoying himself, as were the other children. The show went over well and the teachers and Principle were very thankful for the show. Done deal right, not quite. About four weeks after the show, I received a letter of thanks from that boys mother thanking me and making like I was a god. The letter went on to say that their son had just passed away from cancer, but that day, that show gave him one hour of joy that he didn't stop talking about even when the pain grew more and more to the end.The mother thanked me again for making her sons last days "Special." Whenever I get a little down, or wonder if what we do has an effect on our audience, I pull out the photos that one of the teachers took that day. I look at that little boy, and remember the smiles, the laughter and the clapping, and I KNOW what we do has power, and is good. Wow them, Love them, Amaze them. What you do will mean so much to them. Enjoy this experience. It will touch your heart. |

Our SAM club does shows for sick kids in several hospitals every year during magic week, and I always look forward to it. Be prepared to do your magic tricks with a gown and mask on.

I attend several local hospitals every month, and provide a small show, balloons, songs, and close-up magic. It's a great privilege, and incredibly rewarding. Though, I might add, it can be extremely demanding. I never know who I'll be seeing next - around the wards, it might be a 2 year-old who'd like a balloon and to meet one of my puppets - or a six-year old who wants to see some magic (and a balloon). Perhaps a 15-year old who would enjoy some coin and card tricks, mind reading, etc. For the shows I perform, in a public area (or sometimes in one of the wards) it's again impossible to know how many kids, or what ages they'll be. So, thinking on your feet is vital.
As you can imagine, many of the kids are fairly miserable, and can be in varying degrees of discomfort or pain. It's wonderful to take their minds off all that for a few minutes, and get them laughing and playing along. The parents are often thoroughly bored too - perhaps they're staying on site for the duration of their kids' hospitalisation - I make sure to entertain them as well as the kids. The UK hospitals all have air-conditioning, and I ALWAYS get incredibly thirsty at these visits. Luckily, they also have plenty of water dispensers. Drink lots, or you'll feel thoroughly exhausted afterwards! Here's my website page about it - and a photo of one little lad that I met a few months ago: http://www.pottythepirate.com/#/pod-charity/4539690620 Good luck, Hansel, I can promise you it's an experience you'll treasure. |

Eric, that's a touching story. Great job bringing joy into that child's life. That's what it's all about man . . . .
My family has a history of cancer. My Dad passed at 56 and my Mom at 63. So at the age of 40 years old I had lost both parents. I'm now 46 and I have also performed for sick kids and I know how rewarding it can be. I have promised myself that if I ever get cancer, I have nothing to complain about. How can I complain having lived a healthy existence so far and doing what I love to do, when so many children never even had the chance to live, grow up, have a family and experience life. I will NOT complain . . . .

We create much more than magic, juggling and puppetry for our audience and ourselves. We create memories.
One of mine includes a request during a similar show. (it was done one to one) A young lady said...make the puppet dance..... ... make that one sing...... ... .... make that one die..... Through the tears and laughter .. ... you are all appreciated by.... Harris aka the doctor of laughology
