I know there is a separate posting discussing the close up week on Letterman that happened recently (May 2010), but I'd like to specifically ask members' opinions about the choice of COIN magic that Johnny Ace Palmer performed during his turn. Some have commented that he did awesome coin work to help begin his set, while others have stated that these were mainly sleights that had more of a "look what I can do" type of feel and not coin "magic." What did you think of the coin portion of the act?

Didn't he pull a coin from behind Dave's ear? Isn't that the quintessential coin trip?
So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark — that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

I have never been a fan of showing that you can do a muscle pass, and that angle really showed the mechanics, but the rest was really good and dovetailed nicely with the ring work.

Frankly, I thought the choice of the coin material to open with was a bad one. The coin rolls and muscle pass came off as show-off-y. But they were better than pulling a coin from behind Letterman's ear. That has to be the hoariest "my uncle is a magician" cliche, and to do it without injecting any irony into it just felt embarrassing. All of that said, the baby chicken finale of his cups and balls was pretty great.

I thought he was the best guy on there so far this week. He was good, very good sleight of hand guy. I didn't mind the show of initial show of dexterity, seemed ok to me. I liked it. But I will say a lot of these guys have problems maybe because of the way they seated somewhat side by side to the desk. Hard setting to be situated in and still do good magic. I know Letterman sees nothing but Im sure that load of those baby chicks went unseen by anyone seeing it for the first time - Excellent!

I didn't mind the coin rolls. Given the tough angles I think it was a good choice. Even though opening with flourishes can seem like showing off, his line "that's three, that's hard, that's four, ..." eliminated that feeling and got me on his side.
However the coin from ear demonstration felt off to me. I immediately wanted to forget that I saw it. Even though Johnny segued from a story about his grandfather doing coin tricks for him as a baby, it just didn't justify pulling a coin out of David's ear. Although I did like David's response about the doctor appointment. If think that comment helped get the entertainment back on track. Ray |

Johnny Ace is a TRUE professional. He did the material he is most comfortable with, and it showed. he had the moves, he had the lines, he had the chirps. His coin stuff was great - the florishes in the beginning said he had the skill, and the coin from the ear was fun. He transitioned beautifully into the ring, and then all the other stuff (the act he does all the time). Letterman laughed at his lines, and seemed to really enjoy himself. Just a great, great performance. BRAVO Johnny!

Listen to the audience. He killed! I enjoyed that a lot too.
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

I loved Johnny Ace Palmer and John Carney on Letterman. Both have a good smooth comic thread through their acts that works extremely well on Letterman's show. Purely serious magicians don’t seem to fare as well there, probably because Letterman won't let them; he seems to much prefer the folks who sling comedy right back at him.
Thanks! Jim |

Johnny Ace is an outstanding performer and lecturer. He is a true professional who has won many awards and has been in the game a long time. I enjoyed his TV appearance on Letterman. Also had the pleasure seeing him live last year and he killed with all his close-up magic including the live chicks. A real gentleman too.

Thanks so much for the link I'm very glad to see that!
The way he played to letterman and the camera was brilliant. Material was all great to. Opening with the coin work was a good move. Lays the ground work for skill and something most people have never seen before. cool stuff |

I thought Johnny played wonderfully well under difficult work conditions. I thought it was interesting how the music came up to remind him that his time was up. When the music started Johnny was still not quit done. Had he not dropped the ball in his cups routine and the time it took to retrieve it his timing would have been spot on. When those in charge tell you how much time you have, right down to the second, that in itself must make for a difficult work condition.

The music came up on everyone, not just JAP. Paul Sshaffer was trying to add to the magic performances but more often than not he was just causing distractions at all the wrong places.

There are many cameras filming different angles all at one time. If the show is taped in advance a little editing to another camera to eliminate the "flash" of the chick before the production would have been some professional courtesy to a seasoned performer who had much less than ideal conditions to work with. Otherwise, a great show by an excellent entertainer.

Can someone tell me if the string and ring routine JAP used is a standard, and if so, point me in the right direction to finding it? Thanks!
