Hey guys,
I just purchased an invisible deck for the first time and have memorized the mnemonics. The only problem I'm having is that when I spread the deck, I'm having a hard time separating the two cards to reveal the face down card. Sometimes it'll work fine and sometimes I can't seem to seperate them. I wouldn't want to perform this for someone and then look really awkward trying to bring out the face down card. Has this ever happened to anyone? What am I doing wrong? Many thanks! Roberto

Very gentle pushing with the thumb on the face and trying to keep the middle finger (underneath) on the edge of the card(s). If you have very dry skin it can still be a problem though.
And when new, the decks do tend to be a bit hard to separate, they get easier with use (until you eventually get the opposite problem). |

This topic has been addressed before, Roberto. If you use the search feature and enter a few keywords you will find much information on this topic. That's how I figured it out and you won't have any problems after you read through some of the advice that has already been written.
Good Luck! |

Roberto,
Yes, lighter is better, but I also find that if I use the fingers to separate the lower card from underneath it takes advantage of gravity and the cards want to separate, as opposed to trying to separate them with your thumb. Does that make sense? Marc |

Roberto,
I remember when I first tried an ID. I ran into the same problem and then one day stumbled quite accidently upon what others here have said. It does seem counterintuitive that less pressure is what is needed. I wanted to add something about the mnenonics: you can rearrange the ID in a myriad ways. Geeze, I haven't played with one of these in a while! What a great effect. Might I suggest a really cool booklet that will make you smile? It is called Invisible Secrets Revealed. The magic contained therein is absolutely stunning. It's worth the study if nothing more than to see that the ID has IMMENSE possibilities. I see it too often used as an out - which is fine - but the deck itself is SO much more. Also in this book is a fun effect called This is "It". It's fun to do, has built in comedy, and DOESN'T use an ID. But, it is just the ticket for those times you are without it, or, you want to do a repeat of the effect providing an "explanation." Obviously the explanation serves to focus the audience's attention on how you "did" it and they will be watching like eagles. And... WHAM!! You hit them AGAIN and with a fully examinable pack To get the most out of the book, I would suggest you pick up two more IDs. One effect requires TWO of them, but is WELL worth the expense. This booklet was discussed recently in another thread and I know that a link was posted to this booklet. There are two versions. The version I have is the earlier one published by Sorcerer's Apprentice. I have heard of Eugene Burger's comments about the ID. But, and I RESPECT this Master, this little booklet has done more to convince me that the ID is a such a sweet bit of sorcery. I really need to start messing about with mine again. Ahimsa. |

Dobber, thanks for the suggestion. I actually did do a quick search but didn't come across this particular problem. If you can track the link to such thread, I'd more than appreciative.
mcharisse, I have tried exactly what you're describing but it looked a bit awkward. It didn't look the way you would normally spread a card over. Vladd, thanks for the recommendation! I'm going to see if I can track down that book, sounds very interesting. Thanks for the feedback folks, you guys have been very helpful. In the meantime, I will continue to practice. One thing I did notice is that if my hands are well moisturized, I can spread the two cards pretty well. Thanks again! Roberto

If you think about it, you may be making it awkward if that makes sense. Allow gravity to work with you, just relax and the law of gravity will do the job If you have ever studied Aaron Fisher's work, he talks at length about reducing tension in our handling. Even if you are not into sleight of hand, Aaron's work is still a good resource for great handling tips that can easily be applied to gaffed decks. Ahimsa, Vlad |

Roberto, any link I could come up with wold probably repeat the good advice others have given you here, so I'm not going to bother.
Light touch, and if you have dry hands use something. I, personally keep a container of "Take Hold" handy. It is the stuff bank tellers use to count money. I use it openly and don't make an issue of it. If somebody asks about it, I tell them I have dry hands. Good luck. |

Vlad, thanks again for the tips. I will think about that "light touch" when I practice. Btw, I found the book you referred to, Invisible Secretes Revealed, by Eddie Fields and Mike Schwartz. Its funny, I'm really only into sleight of hand with regular cards and would never have thought of using a gaffed deck but gosh, some of the effects possible with this deck are really out there!
Which leads me to another question concerning the ID. Is there a published effect of accomplishing the same result of an ID but with a regular deck? Dobber, I'll keep my eye out for that product as my hands get really dry mainly due to the cold weather here in NY as well as the fact that I wash my hands about 5 or 6 times per day! lol. I've been using a product I got from Denny Haney's magic shop called Magic Hands from Joe Castricone. Once dried it works really well especially for second and bottom dealing. Thanks again! Roberto
