The response I use most often is, "I'm an entertainer. I get paid to entertain. Does it entertain you more to believe that it's real or that it's not real?"

If my audiences don't believe I'm really psychic then I'm not doing something right...

I go with something close to Dr. Spektor's answer. The excpetion being someone who looks incapable of making any life discernment who might will everything to Peter Popoff.
"What's your drug?" she asked. "Hope" he said, "The most addicting one of all."

I simply respond by saying that "we all do."

Here's an anecdote that I've previously recounted on another forum:
I did a basic drawing dupe* for a young lady at a press event. She loved it and deduced that we must have formed some sort of connection. I sort of agreed but then said, "but you know it's a magic trick, right?" (I have never claimed psychic/mediumistic powers). She looked crestfallen and said, "I'd like to believe there's more to it," so I said, "but obviously the trick wouldn't work if we had not made some kind of connection." She perked right up and the rest of the evening went swimmingly. * I asked her to imagine an idea that meant something significant to her and to draw a symbol that represented it. She drew a male member (the biological word I first chose was auto-censored!). Honest to God. |

What do you say to someone who believes you have real psychic powers?

I think that depends on your beliefs, your style of performance and the person asking.
I don't do tons of mentalism shows, but usually people don't ask me if I'm real because they have already decided. They either consider it's just a fun show, or they think I'm for real. Also, for what it's worth, I consider a lot of what I do to be real. If I do pseudo-psychometry or Q&A there is trickery involved of course, but I consider the readings to be legit. When I've done Kenton Knepper's Time Machine I do a real hypnotic induction and give them a powerful and real experience. I don't have a line worked out, but I like the idea of explaining that it both is and isn't real. Obviously I think that's OK for me, because that's what I think, maybe not for you. ? Does anyone who had a quote, line or concept about explaining that they where legit, but they had to arrange to make sure the show would work out in a satisfactorily dramatic way? I feel like I heard or read that somewhere, but I can't remember?

Then I say yes, but we all do. And I will move on to my next routine, "the audience is the mind reader" just to show them that they have it too. I avoid saying yes directly because most of the audience will stop me from doing my magic routine and start asking me to do a reading for them. I'm not saying that what I do is right but it is effective for me.....

"If you think that all I do is a trick, you're wrong, but if you think that all I do is a real psychic power, you're also wrong..... I'm working between them.... but, where exactly, it's not your business ........" (inspired from Phil Goldstain)
