I fooled Cyril with Out of Order really badly. Three of four times in a row. Thus was at Blackpool convention in February

The trick I assembled stops working after a few rotations. I wonder if plastic cards would work better. I fastened mine with a nut and bolt and plastic washers which allows for easy disassembly to fix the problem but will fail again after a few rotations.
The patter for my (adult) friends went something like, "The swingers King and Queen of Diamonds walked over to the castle of the King and Queen of Clubs and swapped partners" .... yadda yadda yadda. My presentation more of a gag than magic. |

Buy one of Angelo's and you won't have that problem
You definitely don't need plastic cards. I've made my own too and they work great. The cuts needs to be precise.

Just discover this trick, exactly the kind I am looking for
I have the book Handcrafted Miracles by Denis Behr's and checked the principle out... I am very confused because the ad (and some message above) say "The cards are so clean, you can even hand out the packet to your audience for scrutiny.". But if it is the same principle as the one in Denis Behr's, I don't think it can be handed out too much. Or maybe the secret is well hidden in "out of order" !? Best Nicolas |

I just found "Out of Order" due to a comment on the Card Trick Game topic in "The Workers" here. I'd also seen but don't have Riveted Monte.
Actually the first trick I saw which looks like it MIGHT be based on the same secret as OOO appears to be the work of Martin Gardner. I actually found this page http://www.lhup.edu/~dsimanek/make/magic.htm when doing a google search on the Gilbreath principle. I'm not sure when this page (which reveals the secret) was published, seems to have been (re?)published by Make Magazine in 2008. I don't think Gardner ever marketed this or published it in any of his books. But I'm pretty sure he was an upright guy, Maybe another case of independent creation. |

I purchased "Riveted" https://www.magictricks.com/riveted.html. I have followed the video instructions and tried to do exactly as instructed but for the life of me I just can't get this. I purchased a second set thinking that maybe I "damaged" the first set and still no luck. I really need a little help with this one. Yes I did contact magictricks and they were extremely patient and helpful, I even sent them a short video of me trying to do this, which they weren't able to view,. I just need some assistance.

Ok so there has been a lot said about this effect, which is very good. There has clearly been many variations following the release of Out of Order but who is the originator of this method ? Was it Angelo Carbone with Out of Order or was it Martin Gardner with Permuting Cards ?

So, the reason I am asking this is in 1978, when I was in my last year apprenticeship as a engineering fitter, and just starting with magic, one of the pipefitters seeing my interest in magic and puzzles gave me some puzzles made from brazing rods and string. He also showed me a trick with four pieces of 1/32" jointing cut a bit larger than playing cards, numbered 1,3,2,4 and held together with a nut and bolt. As you can guess, after swinging the cards around, the order corrected itself . He then gave me the cards to keep.
So as Angelo Carbone would be about 10 at the time and I have found that Martin Gardner admitted in an interview that although he used the effect, the method was not his but "was on the magic market and could be found in magic stores" I was hoping that someone might know who the original creator of this method was. |
