Interesting stuff...I've not seen any of Ponta's work before.
I would agree that Youtube comments mean very little; I've disabled them from the videos I post because I don't need pointers from a 12-year old who bought a copy of Card College last week and now thinks he's the next Joshua Jay or Michael Vincent or whomever. I need pointers from workers, pros, and people that have spent decades working on their material, and can give me good constructive feedback on my routines. The response of laymen is important, since that's who I perform for, but generally speaking, laymen aren't cruising Youtube looking for magic videos. The only geeks that do that are the 12-year olds and, well, us. For the record, I think it looks great and it fooled me. I too would encourage more natural motions with your hands (it's something I need to work on as well.) Don't mimic the moves just because Ponta does them - find the motivation in everything your hands are doing. Otherwise it will just look unnatural. I can tell you've put in a ton of practice. Very impressive stuff!

STFS -
You don't flash. It looks great. Don't worry about the folks who comment on YouTube. Remember that YouTube is search driven, so you're only going to get people who are already versed in magic (or think they are) hitting your video. That's not who you will be performing for. The real question is, what sort of reaction do you get when you perform this in public? That's what matters. Having said that, though, and speaking as someone who has watched Ponta's "Sick" DVD many, many times, and sporadically worked on the routines therein, I think your technique is excellent. You've nailed the illusion. The pacing and rhythm will work themselves out as you perform the effect in public. P.S. - where in the world do you get 4-8 hours a day to work on something like this? I'm in awe of that practice schedule.
Now appearing nightly in my basement.

Fish:
Even having performed illusions for real people, I cannot tell you if it fools them or not. The people on this board might be telling the truth, they may be lying. Performing might get you some honest answers, it might not. In general, if you are going to make a living at it, it will probably come out whether or not it is believable. |
