I just purchased this new e-book from Rob and I am really glad that I
did. This is not a book centered around the next big trick, although there are a few really great ones in there, rather, this new offering is about performance. I don't see enough good books like this on the market so it is refreshing to have read this. I feel that this, and books like these, are ESSENTIAL to anyone that is serious about performing. Rob takes you through what goes on before and during a real live stage show and has some really great essays about performance persona and adding dimension to who you are as a performer. The book contains a sections called "Thoughts from the Stage". Here you will find ideas and tips that I've personally never read anywhere else. Small little details that most never even think about and these can act as life savers for some. Another section entitled "The Real Work on Mentalism" is my favorite. Not just because this is where you will find some "tricks", but because what Rob is explaining here can quickly expand your current repertoire of effects and take existing ones and just make them better. No, this isn't a one stop formula, but it does get the creative juices flowing. His "Introduction to Q&A", "Invisible Deck" and the mighty "Pendulum" are great examples of what sets aside a professional act from an amateur one. Killer ideas here guys! "I Didn't Know Mind Readers Can Bend Spoons" deals with refining your character by giving clarity to your abilities. Rob also defines for us who he is on stage which I found to be incredibly helpful. "Pre-show Rituals and Dealing with performance Anxiety" is a great section that deals with Rob's personal approach to dealing with the anxieties of getting ready to step out on stage. No drugs necessary! LOL All-in-all, this is a great book. I picked this one up for $25 (I think this is a promotional price, but I'm not sure) and, just like all of Rob's offerings, this price is a steal. I would really like to see more material like this coming from the professional community. "The trick impresses no one. The trick you use it for is everything." LOVE THAT MOVIE! |

Magicmayne,
I'm really glad to hear that you enjoyed it! It's nice to hear that someone shares the same views as I do in that the tricks aren't the most important thing to focus on. As for the promotional pricing, the ebook is selling for $25 until June 13th and then the price will go up to $30. Thanks again! -rob |

I got and read this book. I like what Rob presents in terms of ideas and concepts. There are some details Rob shares with you that will make you think on different levels.
As an example, there are a couple of "psychological" points Rob makes about the power of the hand-held microphone and some suggestion about how to best display written information (some of these questions are asked on almost regular basis on the Cafè) ... And last but not least, for people who feel "unfinished" if they don't get some trick... Rob throws in a couple of good effects. I personally liked his thoughts on the Pendulum (but I love pendulums and I would have a lot more to say on that precious tool...)
Then you'll rise right before my eyes, on wings that fill the sky, like a phoenix rising!

I got the book on Friday, and read it during the weekend. I have to say liked it a lot...
The book has several parts: - THOUGHTS FROM THE STAGE Some tips Rob has put together for those who do stage work. For why you should use a hand held mic to why you should have your working shoes 'resoled'. I liked the section as it reminded me the style of Ken Weber's Maximum Entrainment. - THE REAL WORK ON MENTALISM Great tips on scripting routines and two routines to demonstrate it, plus a contribution routine by Luke Jermey. - I Didn’t Know That Mind Readers Can Bend Spoons! An nice section on persona development and on choosing routines. I asked Rob for this section by email when I got his newsletter with information about the book he was working on. I would have liked this section to be a bit longer - Pre-show Rituals and Dealing With Performance Anxiety How Rob deals with this nerves and anxiety before the show. I liked the book, but I wouldn't mind 'I Didn’t Know That Mind Readers Can Bend Spoons!' being a bit longer. The routines in it are great, but the scripts of the routines, not the methods, and the rest of the book is the important part. Also I got the book cheaper because I'm a Rob's newsletter subscriptor. (hint, hint) Nice Work Rob!

OnTiltSoon,
Thank you for your kind words. I'm happy that you have enjoyed the book. To help satisfy your needs, I will work on a separate, more detailed, supplement that adds to the "I Didn't Know That Mind Readers Can Bend Spoons!" section. Once this is completed, I will send it out for free to all purchasers of the e-book. -rob |

I pretty much echo what others here have already said, but I'll give my thoughts anyway...
Tips & Tricks by Rob Domenech This is the latest release of Robs and with it he has decided to not put the focus on effects and methods, and instead has put emphasis on sharing things he has learned from performing, tips and advice of things he has picked up whilst being out there in the real world, aswell as thoughts on performance character, feelings of anxiety before a show and how he deals with them, and presentations. This is not a manuscript filled with effects, but sound advice and thoughts on various areas of our performances... though that's not to say there aren't any effects at all as there are, but method is not the primary concern, the structure and scripting is (which is brill). Thoughts from the stage- The first segment of the manuscript is about the various issues that have cropped up troughout Robs performances and he allows us to learn from him, with him sharing tips and thoughts on how to go about certain things and the reasons why. I won't go into what is covered as that is for those who purchase, but if your thinking of going into performing infront of an audience in a stage style situation then you'll get some solid tips and advice here, and if you already perform in that style then perhaps Rob has discovered something you have not or has a different view on things giving food for thought. The real work on mentalism- The next segment is focused on effects... but not in the normal sense, as usually this is where you'd find various pieces fully explained in detail, but here it's not the workings that are fully explained, it's the scripting and structure. Trust me this is not a bad thing, the scripts are very adaptable and hold a lot of power, and it helps us to understand how to get the most out of our performance pieces. Here are my brief thoughts on each... An introduction for Q and A- I love this, it's basically a lead in to a Q&A routine (though in no way limited to) and gets everyone involved allowing them to experience something between them. I don't want to say anymore as the way it's constructed is what makes this piece so great, and so wouldn't be able to go into anymore depth without tipping the routining, but just know that the whole audience gets involved and experiences something whilst setting up the premise for what you are about to do. Invisible deck- An invisible deck routine that involves the ENTIRE audience. Once again I will not go into any real depth as don't want to tip the structure etc, but with nothing more than a couple of envelopes, an invisi-deck and some cash, you will have something which plays very big, has everyone involved, the audience/participants appear to be in complete control of events, involves an element of risk (in the specs eyes) and appears to be a very strong and fun performance piece. Pendulum- This piece is a collaborative effort between Rob Domenech and Luke Jermay, and is as the title suggests... a pendulum routine, and that's purpose is to give a visual explanation for mind reading. Without going into detail, this routine gives others a visual of the process of how you are able to read there mind, a believable explanation and demonstration where they can see and to an extent understand the process, ending with you revealing there star sign (once again not limited to). Heartbeat - A guest contribution by Luke Jermay Luke Jermay offers up an interesting and unique piece involving the heartbeats of a group of people... it's such a different idea that I won't divulge it here. The routine itself is not for me, but the idea is and I'll be definitely constructing my own piece from this. Well that's the section detailing effects/routines, but there is so much more to this section than the effects themselves, you're getting some wonderful scripts that can be adapted to many different pieces, and they may help you understand how to best structure your own routines for maximum effect. A warning to those purely looking for new methods etc... you won't find that here, but if you want some fantastic ideas along with adaptable and clever scripting and structuring then get on in and enjoy. I didn't know that mind readers can bend spoons!- This segment has Rob sharing his thoughts on our performing persona and the abilities we have. An enjoyable and interesting segment which includes Rob giving us a peek into who he is as a performer. Pre-show rituals and dealing with performance anxiety- |

This last segment covers nerves and feelings of anxiety before going on to perform, and how Rob deals with these feelings.
Some nice tips and ideas for getting through and overcoming these types of feelings. This an interesting and informative manuscript that is a bit different to a lot of the other notes being released, it contains some wonderful thoughts and ideas, with solid tips and advice sprinkled throughout. An enjoyable read from beginning to end, and as with Robs other material there are ideas and pieces within I will be actually utilising. Cheers. Sorry about the post being split up, not sure what happened there. |
