Great to see you are interested in reading about magic theory as well, and not just the tricks themselves. You can read the articles in magic magazines too.

The Linking Ring has continuing articles on the art of magic - you have to know where to look. Even books that have tricks can teach you about the art. Ask yourself, What makes this trick work? Lear the psychology behind the trick and you learn some magic.
I, too commend you on looking for the Art of magic before the tricks. You're performances will benefit greatly by taking this approach. Good luck. Oh - yes - I agree that Magic and Showmanship is a great book. I've read it a few times over the years - and still use it for reference from time to time. |

There are a slew of books on magic history - Steinmeyer has written several excellent ones. A book called Law and Magic came out earlier this year - it's a little more for policy wonks, but a fascinating read. "Paul Daniels and the Story of Magic" is very readable. Bill Rauscher is a great author on magic history - one of his best is his book about Dr. Neff called "Pleasant Nightmares." In short, there's a very wide variety to explore. Check out web sites for groups like the Yankee Gathering or Magic Collectors' Association for more ideas.

If you want to read history, about for example a famous magicican, I would highly recommend a book called: Dai Vernon. A biography. That's something that I would suggest to everyone with just a little bit interest in magic. It's a very interesting book about Vernon's life. It's something that you can read over and over again.
