We’re very pleased to announce that Dr. Larry Hass, who arranged for Eugene Burger’s excellent lecture and workshop at our place earlier this year, has agreed to make another trip down for his own weekend lecture and workshop this week. It will be at our shop (1034 First St, Suite 1A, Humble TX 77338). If you haven't ever been to our place, best to call for directions as we are hard to find the first time (GPS and google maps, etc won't find us, though they'll get you close).
Please RSVP by emailing richard AT magicbookshop.com or calling 281-540-7229. We're counting heads carefully as space is limited for both events and we want to make sure we have enough complimentary sodas, chips and brownies! I'll put details on both events, below, or you can read about them on our website at: http://www.magicbookshop.com/newsdesk_in......sk_id=18 Here’s a link to Larry’s site with more info on him: http://www.lawrencehass.com/ Creating Magic Out of Tricks: A Weekend of Magic Instruction with Larry Hass Lecture: Two Deep Secrets that Will Improve Your Magic Friday, June 18, 7:00-10:00 p.m. Cost: $20 Larry’s current lecture for magicians has received rave reviews from coast-to-coast, including in New York City, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Chicago, Las Vegas (at the World Magic Seminar), and at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. By performing and teaching several pieces from his professional repertoire, Larry leads you through “two deep secrets” of magic that will easily and quickly transform your tricks into strong, memorable performances. For magicians of any skill level. The Transformations Workshop: The Five Pillars of Performing Excellent Magic Saturday, June 19, 12:00-4:30 p.m. Cost: $50 For twelve years Larry has been using his “Five Pillars of Magic” framework to teach professional and amateur magicians how to create more excellent performances of magic. In this four-and-a-half hour intensive, educational experience, Larry will teach central elements of the “Pillars” by performing and explaining pieces from his professional repertoire—which are entirely different from the Friday night lecture, and some of which have never been in print. The pieces will be first-rate, but more important is the possibility that the workshop will inspire and guide you to a new level of excellence in your magic. For magicians of any skill level. Some words of praise for The Transformations Workshop: “I’ve been to dozens of magic conventions, scores of lectures, and countless performances. This workshop was the most valuable experience I have ever had as an evolving, growing magician.” “If you are serious about taking your magic to the next level, this workshop is a must.” “This mini-course has been incredible! I am at a loss for words when it comes to expressing how much these classes have affected me.” BIOGRAPHY Lawrence Hass, Ph.D., is a magician and a philosopher; he holds the position of Professor of Humanities at Austin College (in Sherman, Texas). Larry has performed his thought-provoking magic from coast-to-coast, including such diverse venues as the Wynn Casino in Las Vegas, Princeton University, Magic Chicago, the University of Pennsylvania, Jeff McBride’s Wonderground in Las Vegas, and the Magic Castle in Hollywood. Larry is also recognized as a world-leading teacher of magicians and is the author of the best-selling magic book, Transformations: Creating Magic Out of Tricks (2007). He is also the Publisher of Theory and Art of Magic Press, which is dedicated to producing high quality books for magicians that feed their heads as well as their hands. In 2009, the Press published Robert E. Neale’s widely acclaimed book, Magic Matters. Larry writes a monthly column for M-U-M, the magazine of the Society of American Magicians. He also serves as Associate Dean of the McBride Magic & Mystery School in Las Vegas and co-teaches the School’s well-known Master Classes. Larry’s work in magic has been featured in leading international media, including the New York Times, USAToday, The Chronicle of Higher Education, by the Associated Press, and on the Discovery Channel. QUOTES ABOUT LARRY HASS AND TRANSFORMATIONS Jeff McBride: “Larry Hass is changing the way magicians look at the art of magic.” Eugene Burger: “This is a wonderful book written by a very talented performer and a master teacher. It is full of secrets: great tricks and thoughtful scripts. . . .” Teller: “Larry Hass is an inspiring teacher and a joyful man to know. He has almost single-handedly legitimized magic as an academic study in America.” Robert E. Neale: “I have participated in Larry’s classroom discussions, heard him lecture to a variety of audiences, seen his performances, [and] read his essays. . . . He is an innovator with a superb mix of intellectual creativity, artistic sensibility, and executive talent.” Jon Racherbaumer (review in M-U-M): “Hass joins the ranks of magicdom’s other notable theorists: Robert Neale, Eugene Burger, Tommy Wonder, David Parr, Juan Tamariz, Arturo de Ascanio, René Lavand, and Jeff McBride…. Dr. Hass’s stimulating book deserves our attention.” Bill Wells (review in The Linking Ring): “This little book is a rare contribution to the literature of magic. . . . Dr. Hass’s incorporation of effect, method, philosophy, psychology, and theater into an overall presentational approach is what makes this book so important. . . . VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.”
