Ok so maybe I'm just a sad old man, but while the things an I phone can do may be very interesting. Is it magic or just a puzzle? I know what I think.

Paul, the same can be said of a deck of playing cards, cups and balls, a length of rope, a rubberband and a borrowed ring, etc.
If any of these (electronic devices included) are presented properly they can all be magical. Any of them presented improperly will devolve into a puzzle. If you make the props the focal point of the presentation you will have nothing more than a puzzle--whether you're using an iPhone or a deck of cards. Or are you of the opinion that no matter how it is presented, the inclusion of an electronic device will turn any presentation into a puzzle? I guess I'm not quite sure where you stand. I know what I think too.

To an entire portion of a different generation the iPhone is an everyday, common device.

I think it depends. I believe that for the most part, people tend to think remote control, or some other kind of 'electronic trickery' when you introduce electronics. But there are cases where the exact opposite is true. For example...
I've had the same experience as Tom, that many younger than myself treat it as a normal thing. In fact, pretty much anyone who I perform a trick with P&T's Chat trick thinks they are really instant messaging a real person on the other end. The technology disappears because they are engaged in a conversation. This is the best modern implementation of the telephone wizard trick because it's not about the device, it's about talking / chatting with the person on the other end. The tech disappears and it's the conversation they remember. |

When doing an effect on the iPhone where there are cards involved I totally agree that it is more like a puzzle, but when you are just using what would be considered a normal app like a calculator or a drawing program I think that people would just consider that it is being used because there was no paper around.
