I've got a fantastic family- for Father's Day, they've getting me a Big Green Egg ceramic grill. Of course, this means I also get to build a custom table to hold the thing. The only question is- what should I build into it? A removable, easy to clean cutting board is a given (my father-in-law has some marble counter-top left over from his kitchen renovation.) I'm also thinking of plenty of hooks for utensils, a water-tight bin for lump charcoal, maybe a built in trash bin, and a bottle opener on the side.
What else would you include if you could build your perfect BBQ table? A secondary gas burner for warming buns? A cooler for meat (and beer)? A wet bar powered off your garden hose? Launch tubes for fireworks? (Okay, maybe that's going a little overboard...) What would you do?

A mini fridge of course. I'd consider a gas burner and you can cook in a frying pan or whatever in there too. Those are nice grills.

A gas burner definately, so you can use a frying pan to cook vegetables and whatnot. Knife stand, knife sharpener, holder for spices and marinating sauces, a "2nd floor" (like a small table on the table) to get extra space (think zimmerman base!), built-in removable steel "well" to place your tools in while cooking so you don't drip hot sauce everywhere (and its easy to clean).
If you want to use a meat mallet, make a portion of the table a butcher's block so you can hammer away without worries. Just a few things I would love

I'm liking these ideas. I don't grill much, but my previous grill was an old propane grill that was a hassle to clean and work with- dirty, no room, etc. I'm looking forward to this one, and lots of cookouts and parties.

Just picked up the granite countertop from my father-in-law. It's bigger than I remembered- 25"x41". This is going to be fun.

Why not make it solar powered? Or wind yea wind is what you should cook with.
On a serious note, (please take the above as nothing but a joke) I suggest learning how to actually cook on a BBQ. I know all men know how to cook on them, but find a class, some books, or what not and LEARN HOW TO USE IT. Learn the physics behind grilling and you will be rewarded. You can take the simplest of grills and make masterpieces.

The reason people don't like to bbq where redshirt lives is cuz it is bbq season year round. Women love us to do it, and it isn't really fun.

We have a commercial (I think it's for Target) where two women are meeting at a BBQ run by the husband of one woman who bought him a grill.
WOMAN #1: You bought Bob a grill? WOMAN #2: No. I bought ME an entire summer of not cooking. WOMAN #1 thinks for a second. WOMAN #1 (to husband): Sweetie, do you want a grill?

Here in Paraguay, we eat "Asado" which is BBQ for want of a better word. Except it is cooked on a "parrilla" which is slabs of beef, chicken and pork on skewers rotating over hot coals. Spicy sausage too. Something about cooking over coals that I've always preferred to gas fired grills.

Don't know much about the BGE, but one came up at an auction last weekend and I thought I would give it a go- I left when the bid got to $875. What?

Mandrin, depends on the size. The XL ones with accessories can sell for over $1k. It's made from "space age" ceramic, designed to distribute heat evenly across the inside. Temperatures can go anywhere from under 250 degrees (perfect for smoking for hours, couldn't do that with my gas grill) to over 1000 degrees for quick searing (which will melt the gasket ring, eventually.) They're supposedly incredibly versatile and can cook anything from ribs, to a whole turkey, to pizza, or even cookies, and the ceramics help the food retain moisture. I'll let you know how it tastes once I get everything up and running.

About half way through, they mention the South American concept of a BBQ.

Just had some tri-tip over mesquite lump charcoal on my BGE. Smelling the smoke- then tasting it afterward in the meat, after only 25 minutes on the grill... I thought it took smoking for hours to get such flavors. It was fantastic.
Oh, and the grill table should be done by next week- I cut out the slot for the countertop and the holes for the legs today. Just need to glue, screw, and seal everything and it's done. I went with redwood, and though I didn't implement all of the suggestions, I've got room to add a few more features in the future.
