Hi everyone. I'll be performing a short act at a retirement village, as part of a church-organized morning tea. The theme on that day will be forgiveness. Just wanted to share with everyone how I planned to incorporate that theme into the act.
Using the no-tear torn and restored newspaper trick I plan on saying, "When I look at the cross, I see God's message of love for us. And when you think about it, forgiveness is one expression of real love. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you cannot love and not forgive. We all know what effect unforgiveness can have on us. It can fill us with anger and hate (show a piece of torn newpaper), It can be a heavy load to carry (show more pieces), It can tear us apart inside (show more pieces). But what did Jesus have to say about forgiving? Jesus tells us that forgiveness isn't something you can put a number on, you can't put a limit to it. Forgiveness keeps on forgiving. And here's the amazing thing for me. Jesus would never ask us to do what he wouldn't do for us. We've all done wrong. Everyone I know has done things that they regret..that they can't take back. But through Jesus and what he did on the cross, our debt has been paid in full. Completely! If we ask Jesus into our lives, we are saying yes to God's endless love and his forgiveness. (show that the torn pieces are now restored). It's God's never ending love and forgiveness that he continuously pours into us that can heal us from the inside and give us the strength we need to love and forgive others. He came to set us free and show us what we really mean to God. |

Sounds like you've really thought it through.
I encourage you to let the magic illustrate your message and not become or overshadow the message. Too often I see Gospel magic that actually detracts from the true miracle of the cross and forgiveness.

Hi Humster, many thanks. You raise something that I've been thinking more about. As it turned out I ended up performing at the church for a seniors event which including bringing a group from a nearby nursing home. I've learnt so much from posts on the magic Café. I performed for about 20 minutes. Most of my tricks had no message, just played for laughs. The newspaper trick went in the middle of my routine and I ended with another trick that allowed me to share my testimony. At a certian stage in my testimony, it was time to put the trick down and just talk honestly with everyone, it was just the message in the end. It was a great morning. One elderly man, whose wife is a Christian, was enjoying coming to that church but he hadn't yet accepted Jesus into his life. My wife prayed with the couple afterwards and he accepted Jesus! I walked away just feeling so much love and acceptance from this group. John

There is a point to just share from the heart the message of Christ, no tricks, no distractions. In my opinion, way to often Gospel magic can be "trite" and actually weakens the message. Just perform good magic, and if a trick naturally leads into a message then go for it. The key is to let the message be the focus, and speak from the heart. I pray that God continues to use your testimony to change lives.
