Yes - it was the creation of Maurice Fogel.

It hit hard !
A friend of mine from Stalingrad mix-up the hammer with a sickle. He tells me it's stronger.

Just adding to Bob's comment -- Penn & Teller used one for their prediction in a sealed bottle effect in their first touring stage show (more than a few years ago).

Hey...I own one! I'm looking at it right now. Yes, Fogel. Bought it when I was a kid. Kept it around but haven't used it.

You could use it with Kurotsuke to knockout the guy holding the black pebble. POW. It was you. Applause.

The effect is called "The Fogel Headline Prediction." And Dick is correct about Penn and Teller using it years ago. (They used it with a pickle jar as I recall) It should be noted, though, that a gimmicked hammer is NOT required to achieve the effect. I think Fogel marketed it that way so that he would have a prop to sell along with the routine.
I think that any further discussion of what this item is and what it does properly belongs in "Inner Thoughts." Good thoughts, Bob |

I just saw Joe Steven's show the hammer on Steven's Greater Magic Teach-in (Mentalism). Maybe they still have some if you a interested in buying them....It was cool to see the workings of it. I am not sure if the presentation that was discussed was correct. As Cassidy said, it is superfluous.

The best part of the Fogel Headline Prediction with the hammer was his instructions. It included a wonderful treatise on WHY and WHEN to do a headline prediction (or any publicity stunt).
When I saw PENN & TELLER perform this effect they used an old-fashioned glass jug -- the kind with the ring at the neck. The jug was suspended overhead by a line and clip through the glass ring of the jug. - entity

Tom is right. The most important part of Fogel's routine was the theory behind it.
