Hey everyone!
I will be heading to Japan soon to teach elementary and junior high school children English. The children in elementary school knows virtually no English, while the children in junior high can only understand simple phrases and words. I was wondering if any of you had experience with this particular situation or maybe even had recommendations for tricks that could be incorporated with teaching English. I was thinking about using the magic coloring book to each colors and sponge rabbits for numbers but I am looking for something more. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thanks! |

Yes, use magic as a treat and don't try to use it to teach English. Think about it, you plan on doing the magic coloring book for eight hours? Maybe to re enforce after teaching but not a teaching method. If you were into fly fishing would you try to use it to teach them how to count? Good luck to you but you are being hired to teach and not be a magician. Note there are folks here that teach English in Japan and elsewhere.

Hi Dallen
I perform regulary in schools here in Spain in English. If you plan on creating a special activity in class instead of 1 off shows at then end of year etc then see if you can get your hands on this book "English by Magic: A Resource Book (Language Teaching Methodology Series) [Paperback]" - I bought my copy 2nd hand via amazon. This book shows how to create routines using specific vocab / grammatical structures with lesson plans for the activities. It's a good place to start Cliff |

MagicSanta, I didn't mean that I wanted to perform magic in lieu of teaching a proper lesson. Because I will be teaching young children, I want to make my lessons much more entertaining (cause for most of us, English is not a terribly exciting subject). So in essence, I want to use magic as a means to strengthen the impact of my lessons and to become a better teacher. That being said, my job not only revolves around teaching. I was also hired to have fun and integrate myself with all of the students so they can get to know more about me and the culture that I come from. Magic is a part of me, and I believe it has the potential to open up even students who are very shy.
Cliff G, thanks so much for that book! I'll see if I can find it! |

I taught for three years in Kuwait. The standard of English among the pupils at an English or American Curriculum School was pretty high, due to satellite tv, comic books and foreign holidays. I taught for a year before doing magic as a treat. At the end of the second year I was doing longer "shows/lessons" for all ages.
Go assess your pupils start with simple tricks that need no translation use a child / helper to translate build up routines that work
Have wand will travel! Performing children's magic in the UK for Winter 2014 and Spring 2015.
