I received a copy of pre-release instructions for JS Bloom's latest effect Monopolized.
I must say Jeff has done a very through job. He has considered all aspects leading to the various predictions and leaving no aspect that needs to be given a re-think. I can very well imagine the time and efforts spent on creating this wonderful effect making use of one of world’s most popular board games Monopoly. This is a fun to perform mind boggling three way prediction effect. Additionally, this can easily be adapted for table hoppers. I liked the clever & logical thinking that went into creating this little marvel and I am sure people are going to like this multi-prediction effect. P.S. Jeff is a member (his nick – JSBLOOM) here at the Café. Jeff will be soon marketing Monopolized. For further details you might like to contact Jeff.

I need to thank Ustaad, Andy Kean, and Chris Baccus for looking these over to ensure it will work in the real world and is not just a pipe dream.
Special credits need to go to Jon Townsend who went through the instructions line by line, cleaned up some of the grammar plus increased the clarity. IMHO, any effect with out the possibility of a good presentation is worthless. Now, due to the genius mind of Danny Orbit, we now have a presentational effect I never thought of that ties in perfectly to the game. |

Silly me, Donny Orbit!
Additionally, the monopoly props have just arrived in the mail today. |

Just got this yesterday in the mail from Jeff. I agree with Ustaad's post- this is a VERY nice three way prediction. I told Jeff I would post later after I had time to look at everything, but I couldn't wait- I was really fascinated with the fact of doing mentalism with a very well known game-Monolpoly. I had some time at work so I took out everything and began reading. What I found is something that will be a DEFINATE winner for ALL ages! Most everyone knows about monopoly and the directions for the spectator to follow during the routine are super simple to follow. The reveals are nice. Jeff provides some nice outs to reveal the correct choices. Some of the instructions still need a little grammer correction, but are still very easy to follow. After I was told about this effect and inquired about it to Jeff- he (Jeff) has been VERY helpful and prompt with answering ALL my questions. I really value a creator who cares about their customers- and I can honestly say Jeff does! I truly feel that this WILL be a winner for pretty much all ages. For table hopping- pocket space may be an issue, but if you are like me and bring more than you need to a walk-around/strolling gig and switch out effects- this will be a GREAT addition to your set. For a house party- this would be perfect! Jeff- very nice job with this and hats off to you for GREAT customer service! Thanks!

Again- I agree with you Andy. Though I do not know Jeff personally- just communicating by e-mail- he has been so helpful. This effect needs to be marketed more. It really is a great piece of mentalism with an awesome theme!

What are some of the similarities and differences between "Monopolized" and Danny Archer's "Mental Monopoly?
|

Thanks for asking...
I can easily answer this one. I spoke to him over the phone. First of all, his effect came out in 2003. I had no idea about his effect so we started communicating and shared our routines. His method to force a property and token are based on the KISS principle. The money is forced using 1 chance card. Inside his envelope are three items. In my effect, only two are inside the envelope. The token is freely named, no magician's choice. The money amount is determined by a free choice of the top chance or community chest card after both sets are mixed. If the spectator chooses choice, you show them what they could have chosen. The main difference is the property is never said outloud. It is a mind reading experiment. You divine the property using either the method supplied in the Jr version or the Sr. Version. In fact, you can INVOLVE the entire audience in the Jr version and everyone screams out the name of the property "sent to" you! What a way to end it! Is mine better? Of course not. It is just different. My latest instructions now include: Credits go to Donny Orbit for the killer patter ideas at the end as well as my magic friends who reviewed this: Andy Kean, Richard Bush, Chris Baccus, Jonathan Townsend, and Peter Duffie. I found out I am not the 1st person to invent a prediction effect using the Monopoly theme. It was recently brought to my attention that Danny Archer came up with mental Monopoly in 2003. His wonderful routine predicted a property, token, and money. My method is completely different. You are NOT predicting a property. You are divining a mentally selected property NEVER named out loud. Additionally, the token is also freely named. Danny knows I am not going big with this. I only sell my magic so I can purchase items to do volunteer work for the military at Eglin AFB. As some of you know, I was giving away my effects to help ALDO. |

Thanks, JS, for explaining the subtle differences. Two points, though. First, I don't know what you mean by the "KISS principle," but I don't believe that is Danny's method. I can't say more without revealing Danny's method, which we should all respect, especially on a public forum. Second, you could, probably have explained the differences without being as open with Danny's presentation.
I guess the best way to compare the two is to simply buy Monopolized and then offer a comparative review. I'll place my order later this evening. I look forward to enjoying your handling. |

Just in case anyone else does not know, KISS stands for KEEP IT SIMPLE, SIMPLE. In other words, basically self working and fool proof like the riffle force, cut deeper force or PATEO Force.
For example, the PATEO force. Some people love it, other do not because of how it ends. I would NEVER use it to force an item ( unless it makes sense for the effect), but I would use the process to get a target in a loction so I can force it later. The same goes with the riffle force. I will use it to set up for a revelation LATER on. Additionally, I believe in justification of why are we doing this? Again, if you really think about the game clue, it is a game of elimination, right? I could see the PF being used in a CLUE routine, but your patter best be strong to justify once you get down to two killers, weapons or rooms, right? A true mentalist routine would be name a person, weapon, and room and BOOM, out falls a note predicting the outcome. Is this fun for everyone watching? Not IMHO. I'd rather have a spectator have a HUGE role in the outcomes. For example, have the weapon cards mixed and five people each remove a card LEAVING you with the murder weapon. Mix the room cards and give differnt people the choice of which card is a clue and the other is placed back on top and the cards mixed over and over. This means audience participation. My degree is in math so sometimes I do not see grey Ok, here is how a token is chosen is my Sr Delux Monopoly version. Your spectator imagines she is a playing a game of Monopoly with your family, you, your brother, mom and dad. She reaches into the litle black velvet bag and removes four tokens. The person is then asked if she would like to be one of those four or are they the ones used by your family. FREE CHOICE. If she decides each person in your family has chosen those, she'll simply name any of the four left. Both handlings are totally different. |
