It seems to be not only in the UK that these business problems occurr. Having just returned to find several mails from workers in the US with Norm Bigelow who also mentions that Manzini has had these problems as well !
I know this is not the place to give secrets out but knowledge of the options open to us all under duress should be discussed. Ken. |

1)Damage to reputation,,,or worse health. I think ones own reputation and health are in your own hands. To stay healthy you don`t take chances. This is a form of entertainment, a job, that`s it. Like Harley, I don`t think challenges are the way forward for any novice. With work like this knowledge is everything, a novice has little knowledge. The saying that all press including bad press is good, has quite a bearing in escapology. Some ea`s are poor escapists but good showmen ! The press like all media can be manipulated (To a point) So with the proper skills the failure of escape could work in your favor ! Could be used as a self challenge to try again ! Gigs dry up,,,,in my experience to get booked as an escapologist alone is very hard. To use the escapology as a horse which carries your personality, your comedy or your own tag is the only way. In my case the catch line is " I specialize in the preservation of unusual entertainment" The word "Unusual" tickels their thoughts into asking, wanting more. (Daniels was never a magician to an Agent, he was an unusualist ! Insurance,,,,,can`t get any on yourself only Public Liability so you risk your neck at your own risk. Escapology dies as an art form !!! Is it an art form ? We may see it as such but art is in the eyes of the beholder. To me its a form of entertainment, a living. NB the final paragraph ,,,,hahaha "If we can keep the posts on topic,,,,and not have it go bad like in the old days etc etc then so much the better !!! Well I think some of the above posts have answered this themselves. I hope the above has helped a little, but they are my thoughts on this subject no one else. Ken. |

Ken and others
Is the old saying "there's no such thing as bad publicity" true in your experience, or can publicity be negative and not beneficial to you? And the question of a novice taking and challenge type escapes do feel it down to the individual to make a decision as to when they are capable your amassed enough knowledge to start doing this kind of stunt? What about escapes that are actually planned by the escapologist and the event, but billed in the press as challenges? I know I go off topic sometimes and I apologise for that I should know better especially on the serious topics. I will chain myself to the desk and chastise myself late! Thanks for your time Dave. |

No such thing as bad publicity,,,,hmmmm, maybe the manipulation of such publicity is the key ie,,,,you fail to get out of x while working at the local charity gig,,,Mr Bum tips off the press that you are a XXXX escapologist, they get their teeth into you so you do the whole stunt again (This time the whole County knows about your mistake,so interest has biult out of it) You do the same stunt again in front of heap big crowd, goes well,,,your the man !!! So good out of bad.
NB >>>> You could be the Mr Bum who tips them off !!! I think if a novice considers they are capable of pulling off a challenge then its up to them, they are there own boss. If they fail, they fall flat, with knowledge and control you will never fail,,,or at least always have an out. If the press mis bill what you do, there isn`t much that can be done about it (All the references to Houdini which seem to creep into press coverage regards escapes are put there by them) I never quote Harry this or that but comparisons have found print all the time. I guess its like a boxer in interview when Ali`s name seems to pop into the equasion. To bill as a challenge escape has to be covered from every possible angle,,,I have always used the Deval method which cost me huge at the time but has rewarded me big time in return. It is not mine to expose. Is the Deval method in a book? VHS? Manuscript?
If not, who has the rights? I know Riley was given permission to make his locks. If you read this Riley, do you hold the rights to the info Ken mentions? If you don't (Riley) then who does? I'm sure many here would put their hands in their pockets for such info. I know I would!!

Sad but true,
I found great mirth in helping a fellow EA in a water tank escape. Through the most unbelievable bad luck, a man in the audience happened to work for the EA's life insurance co. The EA was sent a cancellation of policy letter the next day for engaging in dangerous behavior.

"David's" padlocks are still around - the one's I've seen are rubbish - they take time to do properly. David's correct method of the cell escape is another matter, and for that I do have permission to publish. It will be an "eye-opener" to those who thought they knew how it was done. And yes, it IS on it's way. Riley |

My mistake Riley, I thought you had permission to make David's locks. If you didn't gain this then I doubt anyone did and his secrets will sadly vanish over time. Especially limited knowledge like the challenge stuff Ken mentioned and the Fenton lock secret. I'm glad the cell escape stuff is going to be released though. Very interested to learn more about that... I'm guessing its different to the info David released in his book on cell escapes? He was a cheeky bugger, fancy keeping stuff back

David was a clever man who kept things which he considered too much value to himself.
Riley I think was one of his close friends, I met him while working the shows in the Manchester area way back so my knowledge of him would have been over a six or seven year cycle. He approached me regarding his method of challenge escape which I don`t believe was published. At this time he had a few problems (Will not elaborate) And over the next twelve months convinced me that I could not afford to pass this by !! The cost was very high and I was broke at the time,,to cut to the chase, I got the dosh, spent a day in his garden shed going over everything, he followed up with backup calls as my problems cropped up through the doing of it and in the end I got his drift and have used it to good effect and cash ever since. I know of two others who poo pooed his offer due to the price but being young and gullible I went the mile. Promises made to him regards the passing on of this have been upheld and up to now I have seen nothing anywhere near to his method being used. I understand that a German entertainer also got the nitty gritty at the same time as me, so David did well during that month of his carreer!! Nice man. Ken. |

You know how to dangle that carrot just out of reach don't you!
Lovely story though. Strange to think that you were once the new face on the show ground.
