I saw this article over the weekend:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/04/fashio......?_r=2&hp I have not noticed them up here in Canada yet, but it sounds as though they are gaining popularity in the States. I was just curious whether many people have noticed them yet. Are you / your daughters / girlfriends wearing them? I was reminded of the article as I was watching the Korean movie "Death Bell (2008)" this evening, when I noticed that a number of the Korean actresses in it appeared to have unnaturally large eyes.

The Scleral contact lens, which is what these are, has been used to treat various maladies of the eye/cornea for a long time. Besides being used medically, sclerals have been used by athletes to replace the need to wear glasses when competing in contact sports or where the head is subject to severe movement. Scleral lenses grip the eye as opposed to floating over the corneal area as do regular contact lenses
The movie industry has been using sclerals to alter the look of eyes when makeup just won't get the job done...think blind eye, alien and otherworldly characters. Now the fashion industry has discovered something new they can make money with.

From what I've read, though, Scleral contact lenses are large and typically have a diameter in the 18-20 mm range. That is supposedly about twice the size of a standard gas permeable contact lens. Scleral lenses also gap over the cornea leaving a vault that serves as a fluid reservoir. The big eye / circle contact lenses are typically in the 14 mm diameter range, and I do not believe they leave the vault the Sclerals do. So from this it does sound as though the two are somewhat different.

Typical contact lenses cover/float over only the corneal area...big eye/circle contacts extend outward past the cornea onto the sclerae...the white of the eye...ergo scleral lens. There are large and small scleral appliances that cover either a small portion of the eye, big eye/circle lenses, or large sclerals that cover the entire visible sclerae/white of the eye, Hollywood creature effects.
Remember in "Christmas Story" the trouble the restaurant staff had singing Jingle Bells? Big eye, Circle...Scleral. I'm done.
