But, to me, this guy and his assistant seem bored themselves by their own routine. He doesn't even bother to do the "carrot prover" on his head chopper. Talk about no charisma or stage presence.

There are a lot of ametures on you tube, and I'll generally cut them some slack if they are really trying, but this guy seems to want to be a professional.

It's not just you.

Only reason I could imagine is for promotional purposes if you don't have any good gig footage... but then it should be at least a full dress rehearsal you take seriously. Not just "going through the motions"... which is why I suspect this fellow is no better when on-stage.

The performance was definitely lacking; but so was the prop. Most head choppers I've seen show the blade come out the bottom, and you can track the edges of the blade through the sides of the chopper. Neither feature was present in this case.

But let's get back to the performance. It's too easy for us to simply complain. How about if we make some suggestions for improvement? This way, others can actually learn from this thread.

As for two immediate suggestions, I would tone down the costuming (his suit hurt my eyes) and I would definitely use an audience volunteer for the effect. Nothing a performer does on stage (including the clothes he wears) should ever overshadow the effect he is about to perform. In this case, his costuming was very distracting and did not add to the effect in any manner.

This is also one of those effects that can easily be used to involve the audience. If one of their own is suddenly facing the gallows, everyone will suddenly be scrambling to take a picture. The by-play you can get will be tremendous and the entertainment value of the effect will have suddenly skyrocketed.

AGHH AGHHHH why oh why did I watch his chair suspension video. I am cringing in pain. as a person who absolutely adores that illusion, it pains me to see it performed so poorly. my only hopes is that it was a practice video and that they both are reaching out for help, assistance, feedback and avice.
