HOw many of you perform Immaculate Connection for table hopping or close up environments? Just wondering how easy it is to get away with, at very close distances. I've been working on it, and my fingers are sore from trying to tear thru 6 layers of cardboard. I actually find that the hardest part of the routine. Paul Harris says something to the effect of "If you're a real man, you can tear the cards" on his video. So I'm a little embarrased that I have so much difficulty with the tearing.
I also sometimes have difficulty keeping the cards in my hands in the 'closed' appearance as I'm trying to link the card on the table. The cards are sometimes bent out of shape and there is too much space between the break. No matter what I do with my right fingers, I can't get the opening closer together. Any advice about the above two issues would be greatly appreciated. I've gone thru a deck and a half of practicing so far. Thanks! |

If you have to, tear only the two similar cards together, then the odd card. I saw one guy, I think it was Matos, leave out the table sequence. He puts the card in his mouth instead, links the other cards to it under cover of his hands, displays them, then tears the cards with his teeth before restoring them.

I too leave out the table sequence. I think it is beautiful, but the real impact is that first gorgeous link.
If you REALLY want to have fun tearing, try Sylvain Marouf's "Osmosis." OUCH!! An EASY tear and a GREAT linking card effect - using ONLY one card is Harry Lorayne's "The Best Gosh Darn Impromptu Linking Card Effect You'll Ever See!" found in his book Quantum Leaps, pp. 149-157. Also check out the item that follows it "Linking Card Addenda", pp. 158-161. While not strictly impromptu, it packs a VERY mean punch. Ahimsa, Vlad |

I think I've seen Loraine's version on youtube (while I was reading other posts on this topic). It appears to be a slightly different effect (cards are linked in a circle?)
If I learn it, perhaps that can be done in addition to Immaculate COnnection. Quote:

And although one of the cards is slightly modified, it's completely imperceptible and can be introduced very innocently in the course of a routine. |

I just saw another PH version called 'Cardboard Connection', which uses two cards (apparently). Osmosis looks very clean, although not keen on doing more tearing. Was Marouf's Osmosis published in any of Paul Harris Art of Astonishment books? or did Marouf publish it somewhere?

I've been doing Immaculate Connection for about 27 years, since it was first released under the New Stars of Magic from Tannen's as a manuscript. It takes a lot of practice to get it right and build up your finger strength. I probably went through three or four decks of cards when I learned it.
I do it move for move and have never changed a thing. During strolling, with no tables, I do the table link off of a spectator's hand. Never had a problem doing this close-up, surrounded. If I remember correctly, Cardboard Connection has some angle issues. I was always fascinated with linking cards since I first saw an ad for the Crabtree Connection in the late 70's. What's wonderful about the Immaculate Connection is the premise of the routine. This is one of the few routines that I do as written. My advice - don't give up. It takes a while to get this one, but once you master it, you'll always have it. |

Sixten Beme had a nice linking card, don't know if it's still available.

If I have to do one trick, this is the one I do. I don't do the table link cause I find it extremely knacky and I could never get it to work so I put the card in my mouth and drop it onto the ring just like Luis dematos did on tv. yes, tearing the cards take practice. After you fold the cards, bend them slightly where you want tear them and all you need is get started and then the rest is easy. I do this very close sometimes, right infront of their eyes.

Here's a tip for the "table link challenged".
I too could never get the table link to be consistent as described. So instead of approaching the tabled card from above and entering into the center of the tear/hole, what I do is to come at it from the edge of the card, the outside of the card - hitting it from the long end of the card and I put my finger on the opposite end so it doesn't slide. For me it works 100% of the time. Also it gives you the advantage of doing it on any surface, which can be really tricky doing it the other way. If you want really clean, round circles in the card, then do what Copperfield did and use Tally-Ho Circles. The circles in the middle are the perfect place to tear. |

Hey, Domino, thanks for the table link tip. I rarely perform this and only learned it by watching the Coppefield performance many moons ago, but the table link part was never 100% for me. But you method has given me some ideas to improve it. Thanks! I may bring back this old gem into my card routine.
