Melbourne Magician Pat-Trick taught me a great game for shows where you have adults AND children and little time to kill (perfect for MCs). I never did it because it wasn’t really a magic trick. Just a game.
However, I turned it into an cool card trick! Explain to the crowd that they have to be smart to do this trick. No matter what I say, they HAVE to say “No!” I bring the first child and ask if the understand the rules. They say “Yes” and I send them back to their seat for not following the rule! (in a very friendly and fun way. No one feels bad and only use older kids.) Essentially, a card is picked and remembered and shuffled into the deck.. I keep asking the children who are come up various silly questions until they slip up and are sent back to their seat. “Do you brush your teeth?” ---No “Did you change your socks this week?” –No etc. Towards the end I tell them that they can only say YES! when I ask them whether I found their card yet? At the end, a pull out the WRONG selection and ask “Is this it?” “No” “You can say Yes when its your card. This is your card?” “No” “You can say yes because its your card” “No its not” etc. etc. This gets lots of laughs because both the trick and the game have backfired. Eventually I ask them what their card was. They answer and I turn over the card they thought was wrong and it has turned over and say IS THIS IT!?! They all shout YES! and everyone is a winner. I hope I do this routine justice because it plays very well at festivals and schools etc with older kids and adults. |

I actually use jumbo alphabet cards to make it even easier to see.

Nicholas,
Very effective. I do a similar routine (except the replay is "yes" -- "do you go to school", "do you play sports", and finally "do you have a girl/boyfriend?") I finish off by giving the volunteer a small magic trick as a prize, and everyone goes away happy! |

This sounds like a great bit. It reminds me of a card trick I used to do called Lie Detector, from George Kaplin's Fine Art of Magic
In this trick you instruct the volunteer to lie everytime you ask a question about their card by answering "No." Eventually you reveal their card. One line that got good reaction was, after the volunteer had answered "no" several times in a row, I quickly asked, "You're pretty good at this, do you lie often?" They would always pause a beat, then answer "no." It always brought a laugh from the audience. It's amazing how much entertainment value you can squeeze out of a simple card trick when you focus on the audience rather than the trick. |

That is a great bit of business and I can see it working very well for an MC bit. I may have to give it a try sometime.
I never worry too much about whether it is a trick or a game of just a bit of comedy business. I am always after entertainment value first and this seems like it would play very well. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I got this one as the 'Yes Game' - a version of the boomerangs (optical illusion) from William Larsen's 'Conjuring for Children', published 1949!
It's great at birthday parties, especially for boys about 7-10 years. I've added questions like 'Your name's Mary, isn't it?' and 'Aren't girls wonderful?' They have to say 'yes' in front of all their mates! Never tried it in reverse (with a girl) and it doesn't seem to work so well with the younger ones, but a couple of boomerangs don't take a lot of room in the case, and for the right group it's a hoot! Cheers, Bill
He asked me if I liked card tricks. I said "No." He did three. (W. Somerset Maugham)

Bill:
Thanks for the added questions and your own thoughts on presentation. I have not really tried this yet but I think I may give it a try. I think the kids would love it and it gets them involved in the fun.
