Sorry if I'm not allowed to post this here. I'm not explaining or spoiling the trick. I'm merely here to ask for help. I'm not a beginner, but I'm not really advanced either, when it comes to magic. So I picked up this gem, and have been learning it. However, since I'm not the best when it comes to magic, I'm not the best at altering it either.
So my question, if it's allowed, is if anyone could suggest some alternate endings to The Ace-Man Cometh(John Bannon, Smoke & Mirrors), so I can avoid the discrepancy that it contains. Feel free to PM me if necessary, or post here if it's allowed. If I'm not allowed to ask this in the public forum, please feel free to delete this post. Thanks in advance. |

Dewmz,
This great effect used to be part of my working professional repertoire for about 3 years. The only reason it isn't now is because every couple of years I retool my working repertoire. (I'm a musician also, so think about it as releasing a new CD) Anyhow, I really do not see what is bothering you about the routine. The "discrepancy" was never a problem. This is a VERY strong effect with a LOT of magic. In fact, so MUCH magic is happening that the spectators have barely any time to recover. I just pulled down Smoke and Mirrors and ran through the routine, remembering what a sheer joy it is to perform. If you realize that the final reveal is CLEAN and the Marlo move described done quite casually, and I mean that, just do it, don't think about it, you won't have a thing to worry about. May I ask how long you have been working on this routine and have you field tested it on total strangers? Yes, John Bannon DOES imply there are other ways to rid yourself of the discrepancy, but, I have found this routine to be a sharp as I could wish given the whole structure. I have replaced this effect with an effect called Master of Aces, but, The Aceman Cometh is a great routine. Think about how many things you possibly already do in your arsenal that ARE discrepant and yet you do not give a second thought to? Elmsley's (face up), Jordans, Hammans are all discrepant for instance. And then there is the O**** S*******! MAJOR discrepancy there yet it works BEAUTIFULLY for so many. I think the reason that the discrepancy as such WORKS in Bannon's routine is because even IF the spec WOULD backtrack and realize there was only supposed to be THREE cards, at the end you have FOUR ACES! Even if they caught the discrepancy, it STILL would not explain the transformation of the Eights to Aces. Let me give you some encouragement: (and if you cannot suss what sleight I am talking about through the asterisks, please PM me). When I first learned The J*** C*****, I thought, "OMG there is NO way this will fly!!" It is SO obvious. But, the actor in me reminded me that CONVICTION of action is my most powerful weapon. So, I just "did" it. It works and is a wonderful sleight that I use in really fun ways. Yet, if you think about this move, you really cannot GET anymore discrepant. I know I haven't answered your question in the manner you desired. But, maybe I have answered it in such a manner that will cause you to reconsider that you are running when not being chased. I mentioned conviction of action. Actors are taught to BELIEVE what they are saying and what they are DOING in performance. The very same applies to magic and mentalism. When I do a vanish in C&B for instance, I TRULY believe that the ball is actually dematerializing in my hand. What this comes down to is that the one little thing in the Bannon routine that is really done at the right time and right before the final reveal frightens you a bit. That's okay, but, if you allow it to keep you feeling hesitant, you WILL telegraph the move to your audience and if you do that, you WILL get busted. So, what is the action? You are plopping cards onto the spectator's hand. Just put yourself in that mindset. It truly is that simple my friend There is a famous (among baseball scholars and historians) story I want to relate to you. It is fact. Babe Ruth is remembered as one of the most dangerous home run hitters in baseball. But, only baseball aficionados know that he was ALSO a GREAT pitcher that would have easily made the Hall of Fame AS a pitcher. So, it got so in his early days in the Show that every time he threw a curveball, hitters would be on it like white on rice. Ruth had a MEAN curve according to all accounts. But, his manager finally found out why hitters were connecting on Ruth's vicious curveball: he would stick out his tongue to the side of his mouth when going into his windup! He was telegraphing the pitch and hitters looked for that tell tale sign. Once he broke the habit, his curve flummoxed the best hitters in the game. Look again at the Bannon routine. Perform it for YOU. Let it flow as you do it. Again, you are transforming cards throughout the whole routine. SO much magic happens in this short routine that your audience CANNOT catch up. Lastly, by the time the "discrepancy" happens, you are far ahead of the game because each transformation has looked different and the audience has no chance of reconstruction. The alternatives that come to mind would really complicate the routine in my opinion and perhaps radically change the pacing of the effect. But, I am certain there are others here that DO have great ideas that I am probably missing and hopefully they will address your concerns. Ahimsa, Vlad |

Dewmz,
Since this routine requires sleight of hand, it fits better in The Workers section. I see you are a new member, so a little bit of help for you there But, don't sweat it. I frequently post in places where the question is better served in other areas. Also, to help you, discussing alternate endings is fine. Discussing the methodologies of those endings would have to be done in PM, that is, until you reach 50 posts. At that point, you are given access to the Secret Sessions area of the forum where these things CAN be discussed more openly. So, welcome to the Café!! I look forward to reading and learning from you! Ahimsa, Vlad |
