Hey all!
Got a question... I have an old ProLine microphone stand that I want to turn into a small side table. My thought was to unscrew the boom arm piece, attach some sort of flange to a small table top and screw that back onto the stand itself. My problem is in trying to find a flange that will work. The stand is a 3/8" treaded pipe. I found a 3/8" plumbing flange at the hardware store and it kind of works, but the pipe has fine threads and don't quite match the threads on the flange (it screws on for about 1/4", though seems relatively sturdy). Anyone have any thoughts? Any ideas where I could find a fine threaded flange or other ideas as to how to attach the table top? Any help would be very appreciated! Thanks much! Sandy |

Sandy,
You can take the pipe to Home Depot and have them cut off the existing thread and have them re-thread it with a 3/8" iron pipe thread which will fit the flange. Nick |

Are you sure it's not 5/8", 27 threads per inch. If it is.

Eldon~
That is perfect! I was going by the size of the plumber flange, which says 3/8", but when I measured it is indeed 5/8". So I think that microphone flange you pointed me to will do the trick! Thanks so much! Nick, your suggestion would be my next choice, but I was hoping to be able to use the stand as a mic stand again if I ever have the need. But a good thought nonetheless! Thanks again! You could also take a small piece of pipe that fits the flange and slip it over the tube on the stand. You may have to wrap some duct tape around the tube to ensure a snug fit. Drive some sheet metal screws through the pipe to hold it on the tube and you are all set.

Another good idea.

I bought a used Eureka base years ago that had a conduit connector added, slip joint with a set screw at one end and male threads at the other. It fits standard pipe flange, I think 3/4"

Hi Michael!
Did that set screw hold the top securely? I'd be afraid of it coming loose if I were to move the table by lifting from the table top (I know... then don't lift it that way ). Best, Sandy |

I've never taken mine apart, and I've never had it budge a fraction of an inch. I'd imagine it is actually screwed through the connector and into the pipe of the base itself.
I've had this table base for something close to 20 years, with thousands of shows worked on it, using at least 3 different tops that I can recall... one of which was a really heavy suitcase thing that opened into a working table. If it was going to move, it would have done it by now.

Yep you need a mic flange
took me a while to figure that one out myself, I almost had a standard hardware store flange re-threaded till I was told the secret.
No one said it would be easy, or did they?

Well, that's excellent to know, Michael. Thanks!
I've gone ahead and ordered a microphone flange and I'll see if that works for me. If not, I'm going to take Michael's advice with a slip joint and set screw. Thanks to everyone for their advice! Best, Sandy |
