Hi Guys,
Im kinda stuck, ive been put in to do a 15min caberet show in October between acts, one of them is John ARCHER! Problem is I'm a closeup magician, I have done stage before for 2000 people but did mentalism, obviosly I cannot do this on the night as it will clash with Johns mentlism act. Do any of you have any idea's or can refer me to a good routine that lasts 15mins that is comical and fun to perform? Any help is good help and greatly appreciated Many thanks in advance R |

Rus,
How about Cody S. Fisher's "Cody's Comedy Confabulation"? http://www.codyfisher.com/store You can get the eBook or a hard copy. The reviews for this have been outstanding and it sounds like this may fit the bill. Hope this helps! rochaz

I've seen John Archer on the same bill as other mentalists on several occasions, even other comedy mentalists. I think John actually followed Graham P Jolley on one of the shows at the Blackpool Convention. You are a different performer to John Archer with a different personality. There is no reason why you shouldn't perform mentalism as well - your mentalism will be different.
If you are thinking of doing a particular routine and know that John Archer performs a version of the same effect, I'd just email him to ask if he'll be doing it that night so that you don't clash on specific effects. Other than that - don't worry about it! |

Caliban, good advice.

I agree with Cailban. IMO two mentalists on the same bill should pose no more of a problem then two magicians on the same bill as long as they have somewhat different personas, styles and material -- assuming, of course, that the audience is willing to tolerate two of anything on the same bill.
As Caliban has noted, it is essential that the performers communicate with one another to ensure no duplication of material and that both are comfortable appearing on the same bill. Unless both are comfortable with the idea, IMO the "lesser light" of the two should swallow his ego and graciously step aside.

Even though the show is two months away, if you are going to appear on the bill with someone of John Archer's stature I don't think this is the time to be working on new material. Assuming it doesn't conflict with something one of the other performers is planning to do, I'd suggest going with your strongest stuff.

No what I think his worry was that his act was similar to the type of magic that John might be performing. Im sure he is just looking for a different route to approach the show. Cody's routine is very good and funny, and not terribly hard to script and put together in a matter of two months. But I do agree say if this was his first show and his polished routine was the only thing that he had.
