Readings from the Client's Point of View by "Charles Garner" (published by Brookfield Press, Auckland, New Zealand). Softcover, perfect bound, 6×9 inches, 95 pages. US$45 postpaid (available directly from Richard Webster).
This sequel to Secrets of a Psychic Reader, the first book by celebrity Hollywood reader "Charles Garner", continues the model of delivering solid, real-world advice from a guy who's been doing this stuff for some 70 years. This is more of a "how to do it" (i.e., less autobiographical) book than the first volume, with a variety of topics best suggested by its chapter headings: • The History of Psychic Readings • The Client's Point of View • Who Are Your Clients? • Why Do People Visit Psychic Readers? • After the Reading • What Problems Do Your Clients Have? • A Sample Reading From the Client's Point of View • The Two Stages of a Psychic Reading • Counseling • Repeat Business • How to Promote Your Psychic Practice • People Who Helped Me • Learning a System • Au Revoir There is a sort of running joke about mentalists not really retiring, but rather transitioning into the business of doing "readings". To whatever extent this may be true, I think that all such candidates should first be compelled to read this book: it will tell them a lot more about what they are getting into than they ever likely would have discovered on their own. I expect that it will strongly dissuade some from making the leap, and perhaps encourage others, the latter of whose eyes will now be considerably more open. As suggested by the title, (the pseudonymous) Garner's focus here is almost exclusively on the Client's perspective, and he delivers the strong but critical message that this is where most would-be readers go wrong. There's a touch of the shut-eye in his world view: not enough to put off the rationalist, but sufficient to suggest the necessary mindset for a successful reader. His chapter on "Learning s System" is both an admonition to do so, and a description of his own gemstone-reading technique, which he uses as an object lesson on why it's important to follow the rules (however arbitrary those rules might be!). There are also a few marketing gems tucked away in this slim book, well worth the proverbial "price of admission". Also included are an introduction by the author, and an excellent three-page "Suggested Reading" section that is almost certain to lead you down untrodden paths. Even more so than the first Garner book, I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in the professional delivery of private readings.

I bought Charles' first book and was slightly disapointed in as much as I found it far too short. I would happily read a more detailed autobigraphy from Charles or a more detailed 'summing up and verdict' of his years of experience.
Richard (Webster) has also produced many useful books for psyhic readers about starting and running a practice - does Charles' new book add any thing substantial to the existing corpus? In other words is it a 'must read' or 'should read'? Wonderer |
