Meandering through various dealer pages today (in a successful attempt not to do any work) I came across an item by Eric Maurin called The Watch Crystal. There is a clip of it in performance here:
http://www.penguinmagic.com/product.php?ID=445 For those of you on a low bandwidth, the effect is something like this: the spectator thinks of an hour and the performer blows on a glass/crystal disc making a watch dial appear on the glass with hands at the chosen hour. The markings and hour hands show up in negative in the vapour left by the performers breath. I found this to be very beautiful and think it lends itself to a bizarre routine. However, the presentation given in the clip was very convoluted and I was wondering whether anyone knows about the effect and could tell me how much leeway there is in changing the set up. I would also love to hear the stories that come to you after having seen the clip. |

David:
If you perform a search for all posts under my name ( Pit Boss ) you will find an alternative presentation for this item that has served me well. Hope this helps. |

Thank you Pit Boss for the pointer, and your nice little routine! The thread can be found here:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=109 The feature of the crystal I like is the breath creating the image. I would love to structure something around this. Plenty of associations available: last breath, breath of God, the soul leaving the body etc. Sorry to see that the crystal only allows two different times (I really hate the force in the presentation). Oh, the actual chemical that allows you to treat the glass is only $22 and is available Here! No need for the watch in other words! |

In the past I wrote a routine where I used a similar chemical to treat a pair of eyeglasses from the early 1900's in conjunction with a story about a young Banker who foiled a robbery by locking himself and the robbers in the vault.
The robbers try to beat the combination out of him, and they go to far. The banker dies, and the robbers suffocate in the vault. Hence the use of breath for the combination revelation on the bankers glasses. I never got around to performing it. I never found a combination force that I liked. I should look into it again...
that magic is an art, and an art worth your learning. The question is rather, whether you be capable of learning it? Magic is somewhat like poetry, men are to be born so: I mean, with inclinations to it, though both may be heightened by discourse and prac

I direct your attention to a routine that has served me well from the late T. A. Waters book, "Mind, Myth & Magic".
It is titled "Astraspeculum" (p. 780). I use two participants. One to choose the card; the other to see the revelation. I use a mirror that can be held in the hand instead of the glass disk (fits my story). The needed material can be found in an auto parts store (think about it, as it is inexpensive)! You can change it as much as you want, or easier, get a couple of mirrors. Terry

Thanks Pit Boss and Ojasa for your routines, and Terry for the pointer to the Waters bit (which is very nice by the way!).
Terry’s mention of using a mirror and Kay’s PM, with tips on alternate substances to prepare the glass with, helped me come up with the following idea: The conversation around the dinner table eventually turns to the topic of death, as it so often seems to do in the present company. I wait a while and let the conversation flow around me, interjecting a comments here and there. After a while I sense that the mood has turned sufficiently dark and I bring out a small flat leather satchel from my pocket and place it on the table in front of me. ”I have something to show you that may interest you,” I say. My friends turn my way, knowing smiles on their lips. ”A good friend gave this to me as a present a few years back.” I take out the mirror and place it on top of the satchel. ”Apparently, at the turn of the century doctors were still using small pocket mirrors, like this one, to tell whether people they found lying prone in the streets were the dead, or the merely sleeping.” ”As you no doubt know from movies,” I continue ”the doctor would hold the mirror above the mouth of a person to catch the warmth and moisture of living breath. That is, if there was living breath to catch.” I gently rub the mirror against my sleeve and then breathe on it. I pause as the condensation clears. ”As you can see I am still quite alive, but you probably knew that already”. I replace the mirror inside its satchel. ”When my friend gave me this he told me the most curious thing. You will never believe me, so I better show you. I will have to asks one of you a slightly unpleasant question. Daniel, yes, Daniel, do you think that it’s possible to now the exact hour of one’s death years before it takes place?” Daniel shifts uncomfortably in his seat and mumbles something barely audible. ”Tell me the first time that comes to mind, that feels right to you, or, I should perhaps say, that feels wrong to you". Daniel thinks and then tells me that three o’clock would be a fine time to die as that would leave room for both lunch and a nap. ”Three you say. Could one really know such a thing?” I pull the mirror out of its satchel again, holding it gently at my finger tips. I hold it up to Daniel’s mouth and ask him to breathe on it. He does so, and in the condensation that forms on the surface of the glass writing can be seen. It says: No Daniel, not 3 o’clock. You will die at 7 The vapour on the mirror clears and I replace it back in the satchel and put it in my pocket. Yes, there is a method. Just prepare the satchel as you would an envelope and wear a modified NW. The small mirror has two sides of course. |

Another thought on vapour on glass showing someone to be alive: Prepare one side of a glass disc with the/a secret substance and presumably condensation will not form on that side. You can then use the disc as means of revealing who is the/a vampire/undead etc.
(Obviously this is just a germ of an idea and has to be put in the context of a routine, but perhaps someone will find a use for it.) |
