That would be Larry West's 1974 trick "Eight Ball." Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki made a version of it using "Go Fish" cards where each card ends up with a different colored fish on it that he calls "Widdle Fithies" in his "Go Fish Card Tricks" book (Chapter 10). It's in the section called "School Fish" where it is clustered with other packet effects that end up in a school of fish as the end result.
Following Qua-Fiki's directions, you could reverse engineer it back into "Eight Ball" if you wish, but you could also improve the old Eight Ball which had no color (thus being cheaper to print the cards!). Using your computer printer you would start with the black and white eight ball, but end up with the rest of the billiard balls in full color.

Larry West's "Eight Ball" is the one, but as far as I know it's currently unavailable.
Nick Trost had a more or less identical method for his "Bigfoot" effect (which was also marketed). The mechanics of that can now be found detailed in the book "Nick Trost's Subtle Card Creations" Vol.1, p.211. Paul. |

AWE Sorry to hear that. Almost thought about making my own but the ink from my printer doesn't hold well on card stock. Ill have to look into the big foot plot thanks again friend.

Qua-Fiki's e-Book explains how to print the cards on blank card stock, whether they are Fish pictures or billiard balls. I guess I forgot to mention that. However, with inkjet, the colors are not as sharp as they would be on glossy photo paper. The good news is that this trick (8-Ball) doesn't have moves that require the smoothness of card stock, so you could print them out on cardboard and it would probably work just fine. Why don't you try an experiment of cutting out six card-sized pieces of ordinary cardboard or index cards, draw some spots on them and see if you can perform all the necessary moves. If so, you might be OK just getting some double-sided matte surface photo card stock and printing out your cards on that. An alternate way would be to get double blank playing cards and put some round stickers on them to look like billiard balls. Remember what I said above about having one black one for the 8 ball and make the rest different colors. You can even do this trick using blank business cards.

It was YEARS ago, but I remember clearly that I was new to magic, and I believe I purchased them thorough Lou Tannen's. I performed the effect maybe a year or two before I moved on to new effects..

Hi Paisa! Drop me an email at jemanly@gmail.com and I can help you with this! This trick is one of my all time favorites, and I still perform whenever I get a chance. Key to this trick is that you don't need 8 ball cards--you can buy blank cards and put a sticker in the middle of each card--The current trick I do has frogs on it, and I developed a patter that goes with it.

Some dealers appear to still stock this trick:

Used to love this effect - did it frequently in the early 80's as it's a good card trick for the pub.
From memory, I also added a sequence using the P-A-T-E-O force. I've still got it in my 'workers' case but haven't used it for ages. A packet trick that's highly recommended - particularly for bar workers! By the way, well sourced Marty.

I bought "Eight Ball" last year at my local B&M magic shop. It is still made by Royal Magic as far as I know. It came with the cards, plastic wallet & instructions.

Was not happy with the size of the 8 balls. I thought they were a little to small, so using the origial instructions, I used double blank cards, circled a coin with a pen and colored them in. I like my set better now.
Have fun, John

When making packet tricks up, you can also buy the clear transparency labels (you need to search for the correct size), print on the transparency and then tranfer it to the blank card. This generally works very well for me.

This was one of my favorites as a kid. Just found one that had been packed away for years.
What a difference between then and now!. Bridge size cards, instruction sheet written by Bill Wells, and at the end it even has Larry West's address in Silver Springs Md. The card wallet looks to be top quality with a crinkled leather type finish, looks brand new even after all those years. |

I've recently been exploring and enjoying "Bigfoot" by Nick Trost, which was published as a marketed effect in 1978. It seems to employ almost exactly the same method and handling as "Eight Ball".
If it's true that Larry West already published "Eight Ball" in 1974, would that mean that Trost's "Bigfoot" was inspired by "Eight Ball" rather than being an entirely original creation, or was perhaps intended as a reworked form of that effect with different art and plot? From what I can gather, the two effects aren't really any different are they? (disclaimer: I own Bigfoot but not Eight Ball) |
