Who is actually credited as the inventor of the Sub Trunk?
I know Houdini made it famous and many credit him for it. I have heard that it was someone else. |

The Brooks Trunk was considered it's predecessor. That was invented by Maskelyne. I built a replica for the Conference on Magical History 13 years ago.

While the trunk itself was based on Maskelyne's "Box Trick", it had only been used for escapes until Houdini got his hands on it. Houdini deserves the credit for changing the escape into a substitution and, in 1893, billing it as "Metamorphosis."
The "Brooks Trunk" was invented in 1912 by English magician Herbert Brooks. It added a canvas cover and was built of steel rather than of wood.

The "Canvas Covered Box" has been sold only by Abbott's Magic for as long as I have been in magic. Not seen any other adds or manufacturers using this cover.
I think most performers don't use the canvas cover just to save a few dollars and it takes a little longer to tie up the box. Just checked their current download catalong and it is not listed, wonder why? |

Abbott's is currently working with Bruce Chadwick and selling his line of substitution trunks.

That is to bad as I always liked Abbott's work, and their Canvas Covered Box Escaper was superior.

Wasn't the Canvas Covered Box illusion the one that Paul Daniels presented in one of his TV shows with Debbie ?

I have a love hate relationship with Sub Trunk. Once you've seen The Pendragons do it, (especially their final version witht the split curtain) all others pale in comparison. DC's version with the cacoon thing suspended above the stage is also very nice. I've only seen one person perform the Canvas Covered Box illusion and that's Denny Haney. I'll take THAT over another generic sub trunk ANY DAY.

In 1974, I met Herbert Brooks' son, William, (Bill, "The Baffling Brooks.") At the time, he was living in Oxnard, California. Does anyone know what became of him?
