There are not any really good illusion plans available. All do not give you minute by minute instructions. None tell you technique or what materials to use.
If you are not a woodworker, metal worker, or painter, it will take a lot of research and learning on your part. Most plans give general dimensions but not all and those will be for what is considered an average height and weight woman. Here is a list of the Osborne Plans from the Café: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......um=7&173 Abbott's Magic sell plans. Owen Magic sells plans. Jim Steinmeyer sells creative ideas for illusions. |

Yes you need to do some research and know your way around the workshop. All the plans ive ever gotten the info is so little some of them I could even use. The best thing ive seen so far even tho the blue prints are not that great but they have a little more detail into presentation and the technical work and such would be the book the great illusions of magic. It is just the most popular illusions but gives you the basics and you can always incorporate you own tweaks. its like 70-100 dollars for the two books

Donrodrigo, from what I've seen, most plans aren't that detailed. Osbourne's plans provide critical measurements and, when to scale, can be read with an architectural ruler. He also usually goes into great detail on the mechanics involved. However, most illusion plans aren't detailed because they're supposed to be custom built to the performer and assistants- you'd build an entirely different box for a 5'2" contortionist than you'd build for a 5'10" woman who's on the voluptuous side.
Plus, due to the very nature of magic, it's tough to examine something like plans before actually buying it (and most sales are final.)

Great Illusions Of Magic by Byron G. Wels
Volume 1 has 308 pages of text. Volume 2 is a large (15" x 11" size) book with blue prints for 107 illusions. This book is probably the best value for money for the stage magician looking for blue prints to build his own illusions. With 107 illusions to choose from, including all the classics, upto modern day illusions like the Thin Model Sawing, there is ample material here for several illusion acts. The text gives you the basics of the effect, the performance, and any special construction details. The blue prints are technical drawings to enable any craftsman to construct the apparatus. These are actual blue prints from which these props were constructed, and of course you can modify the measurements to suit your individual requirements. A wealth of material for the magician interested in illusions. The good, cool ideas are in that long list of illusions from Byron Wels that Laszlo provided. You start with something old and combine it with something else, adding new technology that wasn't available in the past and that's how you come up with something new. Just as an example ... don't all rush to my site to buy it ... is what Jim Gerrish did with the Illusion "Hi-Strung" that combined input from both Okito and Fu-Manchu and dates back to the 1940's. It's not even in Byron's list so don't go looking there for it. But Jim tweaked and twisted it to make a great clown appearance, rope penetration, and levitation all-in-one illusion that rolls on and off on a little cart. It's in his PVC Pipe Illusions book #4, just in case you want to check it out, but the point is...start with something old and turn it into something new. The magic is within YOU!

The Osborne Plans I've seen lately are really redrawn Thayer plans. Not worth the $$$ IMO.

Michael Late,
I think you are looking for illusion plans of effects that are not available. Some of the current new illusions built by the top builders do not sell their plans to make them on your own. That is why they are illusion builders, they make the product and you buy from them their quality made product. The reason being is they do not want junk illusions out there that make people think they made it. Then there is the rights issue. Maybe if you give an example of what you call new we can target you question better. |
