I've been getting really good at the Sylvester pitch, but I'd really like to do it with the big dollar coins like Dan does on the video. Does anyone know of a magic dealer who sells them? Or coins (real or not) of similar size?

I've generally found Ebay or local coin dealers/shops to be the best route. The difficulty as always is getting coins of similar condition and (If it matters to you) the same date. I'd say be prepared for a bit of a long haul getting a decent set together unless you're very lucky.
Alternatively you could look at Joe Mogars website (Magicstars) as he sells 'Magical Morgans' which are very convincing replicas of Morgan Dollars. They're lighter than the real thing but looks wise they're very nice and they're easy to handle & far cheaper than the real thing. Hope that helps. |

Pete gives some good advice here. Depends on what you're looking for. Some folks are sticklers for sets that are identical, dates and all. When actually it really doesn't make any difference to the specs. As long as the coins simply resemble that's all that matters to the eye. It's all more the case that magicians just like things to be neat, the difference in the kids that put rubber bands around their baseball cards as opposed to the ones that keep them in little plastic sleeves.
Anyway, you can get things on eBay, real or imitation. Some of the imitations are pretty good for what you'll be using them for. Joe Mogar's coins are also a very good substitute and won't break your bank, pretty nice. Believe me, laymen won't know the difference even upon brief examination in their own hands. Not that it would make much difference if they did notice a difference or not, based upon what you're using them for as to the brilliant Sylvester Pitch. One of the greatest moves ever devised IMHO and believe me I know. You can also check local coin shops or coin shows as they usually have hordes of junk silver Morgans that would also do the job. Good luck. Posted: Aug 10, 2010 10:22am --------------------------------- Sorry Fooly, I'm noticing now you were asking about Liberty dollars....That's what I get as to responding to posts when I'm trying to get out to work in the morning. Anyway, you can still check eBay for them. Also, you can use any dollar-size dollar coins, i.e., Ikes, Morgans, Peace dollars. Didn't know Sylvester uses Liberty Dollars, but it really doesn't make any difference what he uses.

Thanks all for the help. I like to use liberty dollars for their weight, visibility, and the distinctive sound they make. I found a really good source in Jeff Pace (user name jpace or jprace) .

Believe it or not you can ask your local bank to keep an eye out for you. I went to my bank the other day and some guy brought in tons of "change." Along with it was 72 Ike dollars. I bought 20 right there on the spot (only a buck a piece). Groovy.

I'm with good 'ol MB on this one. Some want same years, same everything. People don't pay that much attention, though. Find a good set and go with it. you can always find more!

Hey, just a thought...any reason you don't want Ike Dollar coins? I went to the Coin and Jewely dealer and bought 4 Ike Dollars for $1.25 each! They were two 1971, and two 1972. I later spent $60 on an Ike Expanded [, and it happened to have the 1971 date on it! Stroke of luck!
Morgans and Liberties are expensive. If you can afford them, yes, I'd go with those, but for the poor (like me), I have to get by MUCH cheaper! LOL! I had to eat Ramen for a MONTH, just buying that Johnson Expanded! ROFL! Doug |

Love those silver Eagles. One ounce, bigger diameter. Great for the CP (for me anyway) elegant and very visible.
Got mine at the pawn shop for $18. Last I checked they were around $22 - 25. Rumors abound that the price of silver is going higher. Ikes are cool too. I just like the extra weight. Never had anyone check the dates or notice variations in wear and don't know any routines that rely on coin dates either. FYI My son has done some work for this company. http://www.freedomsilvermint.com/ They make custom, 1 oz. silver coins, mostly for investment purposes. They handle nicely and the milling is very crisp. Sometime when I get some cash ahead, I'll order a bunch with MB's picture on them.

Be on the lookout for estate coin sales on the big auction site. I got a great deal on a set of '21 Morgan Dollars a while back.

Since there are a lot of newbies reading the Café, I think it might be valuable to point out that while the dates don't matter when you're doing the Pitch, that spectator's DO notice dates if they're allowed to see them on the coins. (Dan's method isn't really a close up sort of thing.)
In point of fact, if you show laymen a handful of old silver coins their natural inclination is to check the date(s) BECAUSE the coins are old. Wouldn't you? |
