What impresses me is watching someone do their own show with their own lines, their own combo of tricks done their way. None of it recognizable as "OPS" (other people's stuff).
How close are you to getting your show where you've eliminated OPS?

Hi Frank, good question... I am trying to put my name on a few entertaining stories by basing it on myself...
Professor's Nightmare: I tell the story of me growing up (from kid to adult but feel the same inside) Rope routine (David Stone, Richard Sanders): carry on the theme getting married having kids... Paddle routine with chalk: how I first came to Bavaria and they didn't charge for beer but put a tick on my beermat. chop cup: gambler on the street being cursed by an old gypsy... etc. none of the moves are mine (although I've never seen anyone false count the ropes like I do) but is this what you mean? The way I interpreted the question is not so much about whether or not you do cups and balls or other standards, but about the presentation, lines, transitions and overall act. I don't do cups and balls actually, but just for instance. My street act is a comedy medicine show with a little music, and mostly puppets and vent. I don't know anybody who does anything even remotely like it. But my main act, my circus, actually has some standard kids tricks, but put together in an original way, my own lines and transitions. So even though I do a couple standards in the act, the act itself is very distinct and original, and I don't use ANY standard lines or other people's 'patter'.

My show is scripted by me but all of my effects are old as dirt. Tried and true.
So sorry I soiled your precious eyes.

Its a process.
Some of my material was originally written by my Partner and has gone through changes since. Some I have written (or we have written together). Some effects I do are still closer to the way they came when I got them. I generally start fairly closely to the way the effect was sold (but not always) and perform it 'till I feel comfortable with the handling. This gives me time to see how I feel about the effect and what it suggests to me as a new direction for patter. Sometimes I will try 2 or 3 different approaches before I settle for one (although I still have the other versions available for specialized audiences). - Mary Mowder |
