Hugard was curiously patchy at crediting.
Some books, like Card Manipulations and the Encyclopedia do have credits. Others, like Modern Magic Manual and Royal Road, in general, do not. I think this is for a couple of reasons. First, I think MMM and RR were intended for a more general public, they were introductory books. And maybe Hugard or his editors felt that credits would be unnecessary and offputting. I haven't checked, but I'd guess that many introductory books on magic today do not contain much in the way of credits for thee same reason. Also, I think the emphasis on the importance of credits in magic books is relatively new. Probably in part because back then, much magic was not published, just passed from word to mouth. It makes me think of Mike Close's great book of jokes. In his magic publications, he tries to give credit where he can; but in his book of jokes he doesn't try to track down the originators of jokes - he can only tell us who told the jokes to him. I think magic was probably like that then. Expert Card Technique is a different thing again. Nerdini sums it pretty accurately here http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=2 Overall, they are all great books nonetheless. However, probably because of the way it was compiled, Expert Card Technique has always disappointed me. I think Braue had to fill in too many gaps, and was unaware of helpful nuances. In general, there are now better (authorised) descriptions available of many of the sleights. |

I'm currently writing a potted history of the Encyclopedia of Card Tricks for a web-based version of the book I've created, which is fully searchable. (I got sick of trying to find tricks in my hard copy of the book).
However, I cannot find the original source where Glenn Gravatt admits that Dr. Wilhelm von Deusen is a pseudonym. David Britland states that it can be found in the February 1969 issue of Genii Magazine, but I can't find it anywhere in that magazine. In fact, I've searched the entire Genii back catalogue and cannot find the information Mr. Britland mentions. I don't doubt he is right, but maybe he read it in another publication? Can anyone help? |

Hi, Rennie. I'm just curious -- in your original post, lo these five years ago, did you mean to say "I honestly did NOT (emphasis mine) realize how much really good stuff was in there"?
Again, no biggie; just curious. Because, I think we would all agree, The Encyclopedia is undoubtedly a tremendous resource. (I just have the Dover paperback version, but it is well-worn....) And I actually LIKE the fact that most of the effects are just barely sketched out -- this causes you to develop your own presentation, your own patter, etc. |

I can't help with the history of these books, so I'll just address the original question. This was my second card magic book ever and it was the one which really drilled home that the simplest tricks are often the best. I tried about thirty or so from the book and the ones that overwhelmingly got the best reactions are simple ones I still do today: "Get Thee Behind Me Satan," "Two Pile Trick," "Mentalo," Kli Ban's "The Spectator Finds Your Card," Al Baker's "Twin Souls" and C.O. Williams' "The Card From the Pocket."
"Two Pile Trick" and "Mentalo" are ones I trot out for mathematicaly-minded people (as is RRCM's "Mountebank Miracle"). Nobody I've tried them out on has ever figured out how they're done (which, in the case of "Mentalo" in particular, is kind of mystifying in itself). My favorite such trick is actually "Mathematical Card Trick" from Scarne on Cards, but these two from the Encyclopedia work very well. |

The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......
