Hello,
Anyone has this book and can give it a review? I searched the board but there was no review about this book. Some people said the material of Karrell Fox was dated. Is it worth buying? Thanks Luc

The book is a wonderful book of tricks and ideas that is not dated in any way, it was and is a modern handling of magic from a legend in magic. After all he made his living from magic, not anything else.
As with all of Karrell's books he does not go into great detail in his explainations. Thus you get only the important move or things that make the trick work. For many people this is not enough, as they want it all spelled out for them. I was one of them and did not realize how good the material is until I had an opportunity to actually see Karrell Fox give a lecture one year. After seeing him do some of his ideas, I said to myself this stuff is fantastic. How come I cannot see the value of this material, and how practical and usable it is for the routines. So if you really want to absorb the material and actually work with the methods and see how they may apply for you, then by all means get the book. If you only want to read it and thing big deal that is to simple. Then of course you will be wasting your money. Some people can present those tricks you see in beginner magic books like they are miracles and many can not. My point is you have to see the value before you will be able to grasp the material. This is not in the book, but to make a point of what I am talking about above. Have you ever did the old trick where you pull out a match from a book of matches and strike the match. Then cause it to vanish and it appears back in the book of matches still attached but the head is burnt. Most people just buzz right by this effect, but I know a magician that blows people away with this little nothing of trick. So you have to see the value of the information or you will miss out on a lot of good magic. |

Karrell Fox was a worker and his stuff is straight foreword and workable. I have to agree with wmhegbil... well worth the money.

Much Ado About Something was famously given a bad review in Michael Close's first ever review column for Magic magazine, when he was joint reviewer with Mac King. Michael has since written that the review cost him his friendship with Karrell Fox who was mightily offended by it. Richard Kaufman has also written that it was one of the two worst books he ever published. Someone on the Genii forum said that all the Kaufman published books were great and RK offered Much Ado About Something and Jeff Sheridan's Lim-tricks as evidence to the contrary.
I haven't read it myself, but the earlier Karrell Fox books were brilliant. I'd particulaly recommend Another Book and Clever Like a Fox if you don't have those. |
