For Immediate Release
August 30, 2010 FUN INCORPORATED AND U.S. PLAYING CARD COMPANY CONTINUE TO PRODUCE BICYCLE GAFF CARDS FUN Incorporated, America’s largest magic manufacturer, and the U.S. Playing Card Company will continue to produce and distribute gaffed decks and cards on Bicycle 808 Rider Back cards. “Magicians can rest easy knowing that Bicycle cards will not be supplanted anytime soon,” said Graham Putnam, President of FUN Inc. All standard Bicycle Rider back gaff cards, including Double-backed, Blank Face, double-face, and Blank Back cards will still be produced by U.S. Playing Card. FUN Inc. has made a substantial investment in these cards to insure that they will remain available through its worldwide network of retailers. Though recent policy changes at USPCC have limited magicians’ abilities to alter the Rider Back design, these changes will not hinder the production of the most popular gaffed cards. Undoubtedly, the Bicycle gaffs so important to magicians will remain available for years to come. “FUN will continue making Svengali, Stripper, Invisible, and various other gaffed decks on Rider backs, too,” Putnam added. “Our production methods ensure that all our trick decks meet high standards of quality. Just as importantly, is the fact that they will still be offered on the world’s most popular playing card back design,” he added. FUN will also continue producing short runs of custom-made gaffed cards on Bicycle Rider backs, a service it has provided to the magic industry for decades. The company counts many of the industry’s most creative minds among its customers, having produced trick cards for nearly every popular cardician of the last 20 years, both domestically and abroad. A wide assortment of modified faces, backs and specially designed cards are regularly produced in the company’s 50,000 square foot Chicago factory. So why the need for the new Mandolin back?

I think this announcement just repeats (officially) what we already knew - that Rider back gaffs will still be available, as long as they do not alter the back design.

This just confirms what some of us have been saying all along. There will be those who will continue to try and spread rumors to sell a product though.

Anyone have a Mandolin deck to compare with a traditional Bike deck? They sound like they are superior, but I don't have a deck to compare. I'll pick one up a.s.a.p.
Penguin has Mandolin's for only $2.25. Then you get the discount and free shipping. So, they aren't as expensive as I would have thought.

Why dis USPCC change the design of the 808 box to the (to me) tacky new commercial style?
I just found 3 bulk boxes of the old style 12 packs at Costco today which I figure will help me through the pain, but to me the new boxes just look cra@@y... I know the rider backs are the same, but still the new boxes to me cheapen the brand (OK and make it a smidge harder to work with gaffs for the future).

I agree, I don't care for the new design at all. It just looks cheaper.

No one is spreading rumors to sell a product. Any gaff that alters the back design (Twilight angels etc) will nit be mad in the 808 and will be produced using Mandolins. There is nothing new in this thread.

I was simply asking why USPCC changed the box - that's it. No rumors started or intended.

Murphy's and some of their mirror dealers did make the claim that gaff cards would not be available on regular bikes, including double backers, facers, etc...
That is why FUNINC put out the above statement. The rumors were spread for marketing purposes. |

I talked to Tomas Medina beginning of this year (who works at FUN Inc.) and he told me they weren't going to make a lot of the gaffs anymore because the USPCC wanted them to buy ridiculous amounts to cover the costs. Or something similar to that. I guess they changed there mind.

For anyone interrested in knowing more about the Mandolin's see this article. http://www.bicyclecards.com/news-pages-5.php
Hi Dodd, someone did start false rumours many months ago right here on the Café to help sell their own product. Too bad the search engine is down.
