Michael's is full of classic stuff, and represents to my mind a full 12 course dinner of bizarre. Gede's book is unique in that it offers an entire system onto which the effects are 'hung'; I read it and both delighted in it and wept: I was delighted by the logic of the effects with the progressive story, and wept because performing it as written is so far out of my reach. You should also read "Hauntiques" for an idea of how fa you can push the genre - this book again inspired as well as depressed; Chelman is so far ahead of the game it hurts physically when you read this stuff.

Whatever floats your boat. If you're a 15 year old white kid from Iowa you're going to have a hard time being a high voodoo priest. Find a good story you like to tell. Start adding some "tricks" to make certain points. If you have horns, a tail and some sharp teeth- work with what you got! Who is the audience and why are they there?

The words we choose while creating the story for our routine hold as much of the 'magic, impact and power as any prop or apparatus we may employ.
Words for me, are the world in which bizarre magic is given birth. Then again, some may point out that I have no idea what I am talking about. KOtah |

"candy-coated lollypop stories added to magic shop items" Well, now I'm thoroughly insulted, as that defines some of my best magic. Here I've deluded myself by thinking I'm a respected bizarre performer all this time. Well, I guess I need to rush out and buy a red clown nose pronto. Walt |

Bizarre magic to me is magic that actually looks and feels like what real magic should feel like instead of just a trick. Sometimes with the use of ritual, ceremonies or even a story with a moral.

You know very well what I think of you and your performance pieces. You create art. You do more than tape cardboard horns on a card duck, or perform Color Monte with tarot cards, and call it bizarre. You haven’t taken your kid show material and just thrown in the word ghost or demon in the in the patter that came in the instructions of the tricks, and call it bizarre. Your material is far from candy-coated or lollypop. Do I feel that you are bizarre? Well, you are my friend, which speaks volumes... Tony |

I actually think Bizarre magic is more traditional. Think about some of the best known tricks: Indian Rope Trick- A boy ends up chopped into pieces, Sawing a Woman in Half-You are SAWING A WOMAN IN HALF!, Everyone and their dog has done the buzz saw, where the magician is cut in half.
For the spooky ritual elements, the spirit cabinet and ghost shows were incredibly popular in the early days of what we think of as stage magic. So I think of it as a return to our roots. But really all magic performance should be governed by the personality of the performer. So those of us who like horror movies and antiques will naturally wish to incorperate those interests into our performances. Just like some people seem to be obsessed with sponge bunnies Of course, I don't think that I have ever used the term "Bizarre Magic" when discussing what I do. I find labels restrictive. I just come to this section because I know there are many here who share similar aesthetic sensibilities.

Dang Tony....now I have this image of people taping horns to their hippity hop rabbits and doing routines called "Tranferance of Souls".

Clever name for an effect actually. Hippity Hop rabbits reconfigurated to an angels and Demons theme. Suitable for bizarrists and Magi-Ministers as well.
transferance of souls will work for the coin worker as well, Religeous or angelic medallions combined with old palming coins with devil images on them, even coins from Natzi Germany. Religeous flyer inserted into Tarot deck locates either the death or devil card. Strange how one brief comment can get the wheels turning. Kotah |

Santa!
Then you would have LOVED the late Eugene Poinc's "Lizzie Borden Bunnies" done with hippity-hop rabbits carrying axes and spattered with blood. I had the honor of performing that at both of Gene's memorial services... talk about bizarre... Magically, Walt |

Still thinking about that Angels and Demons. transposition of souls, Hippity Hop Rabbits thing. If the tubes were lettered with the proper ambigrams, it might enhance the illusion of a transposition!?

Rabbits being the ultimate tricksters and shape-changers, you could go many directions with Hippity Hop.
Plot and character are important elements of routining. A lot of people think of a story as being "once upon a time, they lived happily ever after". I disagree. A good story means, simply, that the audience understands each element as it unfolds. They comprehend the logic that takes us from one point to the next. And it's so automatic, nobody needs to stop and ask questions.

Have any of you ever heard a rabbit scream in fear? It's even more blood curdling than a screech owl's cry at midnight.
