I hope no one took offense to my post on this topic. I didn't mean for it to sound like I was coming down on any one. Sorry if I offended any one!

I too did not mean to offend anyone....However, I must say that I am in total agreement with Linds detailed post...
I too agree that the article in question has an arrogant flavor that I find most distastful no matter what age the author and regardless of his accomplishments ...Pehaps the young author can no longer see the forest for the trees? Maybe he has become what Henry Hay once refered to as a "sleight-of-hand snob"? I don't know... As Lind said...to each his own..in the end it is the performance in the eyes of lay audience that counts. And it is our job to make sure it is a positive perception. |

Is someone who ONLY does cards to the exclusion of anything else truly a close-up magician or would they be in a totally different category. If so, what would that category be?
I guess they would be a close-up card magician. |

Frank,
Thanks for sending the article. I must of read it 3 or 4 times to see if I was misinterpreting the message. I have already posted my opinion on the tone of the article and don't feel it necessary to rehash. What's interesting is I've been doing 75% card magic in my close up shows and have always admired the skill and variety of magic performed by magicians who were not the typical card guys. I've seen great sleights and performances from card guys, coin guys and ring and rope guys etc. etc..Obviously I'm a card guy that thinks the opposite of Joshua Jay. Columnists are often hired to stimulate controversy. Addressing the question of what is considered close up?....(Although I don't feel this is the message in the column) Simply put close up may be defined either by the trick or the venue. Example: Sponge balls and rising card (small deck) are categorized by most as close up tricks however they may be performed in a parlor or close up venue. Linking rings on the other hand is categorized as a parlor or stage piece of magic but may also be performed in a close up venue. Bottom line- As long as it works for you and your audience in the venue you were hired to perform in, then definitions are just that....Definitions! Top of the day, Michaels

There is nothing more devastating than a mixture of good sleight of hand with the odd gaff stealthily slipped in while nobody's looking. I have been doing Back Off by Darwin Ortiz since I saw it in a lecture in the 80's. (That's pre At the Card Table. The new version in Scams and Fantasies is mind boggling. The punters handle the misprint card, you print a face on the card and leave the cards with them. My kind of magic. You could do it by all sleight of hand - Larry Jennings worked out a version - but it's not as slick or convincing as the combination of sleight and gaffus. O yes, and I have a copy of Gaffed to the Hilt. Much food for thought!
Cheers

I tend to blur the line between closeup and standup. I'm not much on definitions in the magic community. Much of my repertoire started as parts of my closeup repertoire in restaurants and evolved into parts of my standup show. Sometimes, my repertoire is performed under conditions that are both closeup and standup -- much of the audience is up close, with some of the audience across the room.
