I have the book with the electric igniter used in kerosene heaters. I've always been told to use cigarette lighter fluid for it, but that's getting hard to find.
Has anyone ever used charcoal lighter fluid? Beano |

I know someone who tried to use it in a Zippo lighter and it would not work. Lighter fluid is usually kept behind the counter these days, with the cigarettes. Wal Mart usually has it, as do many drug and grocery stores. Also check convenience stores that carry Zippo type (re-fillable) lighters.
Coleman lantern fuel or white gas may work. Many fireaters use that. I use Ronsonol. This is my firebook... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dwuxKXyp0g

Thanks for the responses. I've been using Ronsonol too, and it does work great. The only place I could find it was a hardware store that no longer has it.
I never thought of Wal-Mart. I'll check there next week. Thanks again, Beano |

Yah, it is in the checkout isle where they sell cigarettes and cigars, you know those last minute purchases they call impulse buying items, and behind the cashier with the cigarettes. I have also seen them displayed up front next to the restrooms.
Depends on your Wal-Mart layout of the store. I have had no problem finding Lighter Fuel, it is everywhere, Walgreens Drugs Store, and the competition as well. |

Come down off the mountain and it is easier to find

He he,
Actually, I'm in the gulley - still 5035 feet above sea level though. I found a hardware store that carries Ronsonol, and they had a couple of spare igniters too. BTW: My book uses two AA batteries. If I use the new lithium (or whatever they're called) type, it seems to burn out the igniters. I had a place that carried the old non-alkaline bats that worked great. Now I use a fresh lith and a weak one. That works but the flash time is a little long. Anybody else experiencing this kind of thing? Thanks again, Beano |

Most electronic coils are not instant, I know you may want instant lighting, but then you get what you experienced, replacing the igniters.
Being you have worked with your Hot Book, just time your gags for the time it takes to heat up. Just my thoughts on the best way to go. |

I always thought was using a small Bic lighter was the most reliable way to get the fire going. But I haven't done it for years now. Is there something new I haven't seen yet guys?

I think it was Paul Diamond that was one of the 1st to put it in a fire book. Anyway, his fire books were all over the market in the 1970's and early 1980's. I believe you are correct, the best method is the old lighter, only draw back if you want to call it that was you had to open the book enough to get your finger in it to strick, with the electronic, you only have to crack the cover for air to get in and press the button on the bottom. Advantage, I don't know, each has to know what they perfer. |

Might be a bit late, but I found this thread by accident.
Charcoal lighting fluid is completely different to standard lighter fluid. The Charcoal fluid needs to be heated before it will combust (which is why you hold a match to it and it slowly starts to burn from one part to another) Hope this helps. Regards Carl PS Michael, I loved the "Master of puppets" soundtrack. Seems sinister somehow! |

First off the fire or Hot book was invented by Billy McComb. Paul Diamond repopularized it.
As for lighter fluid, I must have 6 half cans around. Everytime I work a show in that the acts fly in, I end up with the partial cans when they leave. I have gotten so that I carry a can of lighter fluid with me in my prop box when I drive to conventions and I work backstage. Richard

As an old Navy Aircraft corrosion control tech, when I ran out of store bought lighter fluid, we just topped off with Alaphatic Naptha out of the convenient
5 gl can. It is used to clean surfaces before painting and to make.....get ready...... commercial lighter fluid. TA DAAAAAA. Avaliable at Home Depot or where ever fine paint products are sold. MP |

When I was a kid I used hair spray or rubber cement with a lighter. Made my own book too. Only singed my hair a couple of times.

I was in Wallmart today and noticed a can of Ronson at the checkout on a lower shelf for under $2.
I won't say how exactly we did it but we used to use Off insect spray to light hats and arms on fire. I am sure that it is no longer OHSA approved. Richard

Michael P Lair recommends Zippo fuel for his candles as it has a stronger vapor than Ronsonol.
