I found this new app for iPhone/iTouch last week. But the PRICE is expensive for me. $64.99. Any one have this app? Can write a review or a video for it? As the App Say: Quote:
CardOracle isn't just a magic trick using an iPhone. It is not just a gadget either. |

Sounds very similar to Al Strangers Incredible Poker Machine.

Thanks for your confidence. I recognize specific café's member dedication to rise little scandal.
Let's be crystal clear about sources and records : First the basic concept has his roots on a matematical discovery by Dick Chenay published in 1950 (neither Al stanger, nor Mendoza). Followed few years later by the magician Max Katz. Later Al had the idea to implement this idea on a calculator which was a brilliant idea. Later We decided to implement other ideas and this one on a smartphone. Otherwise the mecanics and the working of the routine are differents from Al Stanger's version. Which mostly depends on Chenay's work. We do not. Hope this clarifys things. I hope that rather than arousing suspicion about the obtained or not permission, people will just take info BEFORE. This said I sincerely hope that you'll enjoy this app which is a litle jewel to perform. A review ? Sincerely

It does sound like the Poker Machine but I know nothing about it. I have received at least four previous emails from various magician/progammers who had worked up an application for the Poker Machine to be used on an iPhone. There's not much I can do if someone decides to apply it.
I have heard of this Chenay (or Cheney) reference before, however, nobody seems able to give me the exact name of the book or publication in which it appeared. I would love to read it as I was not aware that the former Vice-President did card tricks (just kidding!) Admittedly, I am not well-read on pre-1950 books, especially those by an obscure author. Anyway, good luck to whoever developed it. In the early stages of the Poker Machine, a few accused us of lifting Alex Elmsley's Mouse Magic, however, that was not the case either, so I don't really much worry about such things. I do think the combining of several mathematical principles is definitely Al's original concept and the further combination of simple card moves and/or principles used in conjunction with the mathematical program are also original to the Poker Machine. To be honest, I figured it was just a matter of time before someone "evolved" the Poker Machine to an iPhone app. However, performing this type of effect with a cell phone is not as effective as having a dedicated machine that can somehow divine unknown cards. It's like playing craps on a computer. It's not quite the same as really being at the table, neither for the actual player or anyone watching. Good luck with the item and I would really appreciate being given the specific reference in literature where this was supposedly first introduced. |

While I don't care about the iPhone app, such unfounded statements should not be made. That's how controversies start. Since the routine for the Poker Machine which most people are familiar with from the L&L DVD set, was routined by me and I never even heard of Chenay, the working of the Poker Machine routine is not even remotely dependent on Chenay's work. I also just viewed the link and the screenshot does, in fact, look exactly like a graphic of the Poker Machine for an iPhone screen. But, as I said, it doesn't much matter to me. It's just not an issue so let's not make it one. I just wanted to clarify that unless we're talking about the former V.P. of the U.S., I have no idea who Dick Chenay is or was. I still think the Poker Machine is better...but then I am obviously biased! Take care, everyone. |

I don't know Chenay, but CardOracle IS way too different from Al Stanger's version to be called "variation"... I played with it for some time now and I can assure you it's a totally unique effect!
Whatever in terms of plot, method or impact it's unique and different from all what you ve seen before... and I trully think you can't get that clean with any standard version of Poker Machine Just my humble opinion

Price has come down to a more reasonable $34.99. Anyone else willing to review this?

I think theres a general reluctance to try this as, on the UK version of App store, the description is in French. Therefore, I can only assume that once downloaded, the instructions are in French. An expensive risk to take?
Yves? STOP PRESS: Yves just responded by email that the instructions are in English. I'm gonna have a go... |

Okay - sussed it!
Here's my opinion. On the basis that a good DVD release is about £15-£20 for a one trick pony these days, I have to say that £21 for this app is actually well worth the money. Particularly so when you consider the intellectual material that has gone into it and the quality of the whole production. First off, the instructions might give you a bit of a headache. I thoroughly recommend that you write them down elsewhere and refer to them whilst you are trying it out. It's easy to forget something as you flip from instructions, training mode and performance mode. The Training Mode is excellent and is a good reference to ensure you are adopting the correct approach. I found it annoying that no-where does it say what constitutes a high card from a low card (except for the blidingly obvious - I'm referring to a seven/eight here.) (For those who have it - seven and below is low!) By a similar token, it doesn't state whether an ace is high or low (I found out its low.) There's more mental gymnastics to ponder if your Target Card is a King - but don't worry about this too much. The explanations are clear, but its another step during the thought process during performance. Don't even think of trying to do this after a drink or two! ;-) I don't want to put anyone off! I was performing this within an hour after a distraction-free study of the instructions. There is a video of the performance too, though mine has no sound (tho' none needed) which helps confirm what you need to be doing. Going back to the King thing - I've found a way of merely ensuring that the Target Card is not a king. Nothing ground breaking - just alter the order of the cards in the first phase. What might put people off is the, "It's obviously another example of Ipod technology trickery performing and not the magician..." etc, etc. Well, it is, I suppose, but it can be performed in such a way that you actually make that abvious from the offset. "I have programmed into this Card Predictor exactly what will happen to this deck of cards. I did this before I came out.." or words to that effect. Even then, it is THE SPECTATOR who is unwittingly doing 'the necessary' to the ipod as he inputs card that are revealed as they are turned over from the deck. Very very clever. If you are totally confident, you need not touch the ipod or cards! Though I find it necessary to handle the cards towards the end reveal. The downside is that it can't be utilised FASDIU. A very small set up is required (but can be overcome by other means.) Thereafter, the deck can be examined and used for any other effects. It is a great entertainment piece with four phases which reveal amazing 'predictions.' The finale being truly outstanding! One of the best magic apps out there - appropriately priced in my opinion and sure to get those reactions that we all seek. But, it aint a quickie! 9/10 |

How different is this from the poker machine routine by John Mendoza? It sounds very similar and I don't want to 're-invent the wheel' and own a similar routine, unless, of course, there are significant differences. Is there a demo vid anywhere?
Have you tried 'Up The Ante' yet?? The ultimate gambling demo....a self-working wonder! See the reviews here on the cafe.

Julien : did not get your email ? yves@bluesource.fr
Captainsmiffy : Unless part of the roots of CardOracle are in Poker Machine, the method is significantly différent. The major idea is the ending of the routine : the iphone knows the all deck sequence ! This is a big and great endng to any version of Cheney's trick.
