Hello,
I'm a stranger in this area of the Café and I hope you don't mind me sticking my head in and asking a question. I don't personally provide balloon services but I have a client who is asking the question. What is your opinion on how well a strolling balloon artist will work for an all-adult banquet-type corporate party? I personally have never witnessed this myself but my client was asking my opinion and I wasn't sure if I should refer them to someone in my area - or advise them not to pursue that option. I am interested to hear you thoughts and experiences on this. Thank you, Scott |

If it is an skilled twister that does fairly elaborate creations, they will be amazed. Adults are way more fascinated at balloon twisting than kids. Kids just want a balloon. I have entertained for all college kids, and they will wait in line longer than any other group I've seen to get a balloon. I just did a party last night for adults. They love it!

Is this pretty standard or is it fairly exceptional that someone would be hired for an adult event? Why or why not?

I do many adult events including a nightclub twice a week.
Worked balloons for Black tie events, Art shows, doctor groups, lawyers, and many 40th birthday parties. If your looking for classy Canadian balloon twisters I know a few. PM me and I will give you names & numbers. Or you can fly me up to do it!!! $2,000 and I'll book my own travel ... I also guarantee they will be amazed and impressed or your money back!!

It can be a hard sell, but if the entertainer is a highly skilled twister and has great interpersonal skills to go along with it, it works. Mainly due to what's been said before, adults will marvel at the skill. I've done black tie events where I was busy the entire evening.
I like to watch the reaction of guests as they say,"what's a balloon guy doing here?", then change to,"Wow! What's that balloon guy DOING over there?) Even if they don't want a balloon, most adults will pause on their way past to watch me for a bit, so it is a valid type of entertainment. I mentioned it's a hard sell, because the client will automatically say, "no, we don't need a balloon twister, we won't have any kids there." So I would say it is exceptional to have a balloon twister at an all adult function, and is usually due to the confidence of the event planner to sell me to the client, or the client was fortunate enough to have seen me perform before. I know it wasn't the gubernatorial committee who said,"let's have a balloon guy." I was there because the event agency planning the party knew I would be a hit and they wanted to inject something different into the mix. And hey, I'm in Baltimore, so I'll undercut Marks' fee by a whopping 5% Have passport, will travel! wes holly |

Thanks guys. I'm thinking (but don't know for sure) that $2000 will be a little high for them but you never know (I'll provide the option).

$1800!
And I agree with what has been said above. Adults are more impressed and more appreciative than children. They can also think outside the box better, when pushed to do so. With the right crowds the cameras won't stop flashing. My most recent adults only gig was a big corporate Employee Appreciation day. They couldn't get enough, and when I had to leave some of them where as disappointed as my younger clients at birthday parties. Also, from experience, you should definitely do a thorough screening of the client and have a good understanding of the event if it is said to be all adult. I didn't do this once and quickly collected my check and left as a Rupaul wannabe was taking the stage! "You don't want to stay for the show?" "No thanks!"

I have done a couple adult events in a very posh part of the UK, and when I first arrived, they looked a little down their nose at me, and wondered what was going on. Then I made the birthday 'girl' (40 something) her special gift, then I was surrounded and appreciated! Some kidded on it was for their children, but most were fascinated and held onto them on all night. So I agree - it fun for adults too.

In college I had a sort of silent balloon clown routine "the clumsy swordsman" that I used to do for functions of a medieval recreations group I belonged to. It always went down really well. The balloon weapons amused them to start with seeing as how they had just spent all day generally whacking each other with more solid recreations, then the little 'story' always got a good laugh at the punch-line.
I realize that's not exactly what you are talking about, but I thought I'd mention it as another way to make balloon sculpting relevant to adults...

Over the last several decades, I've performed at countless events for Fortune 500 companies that consisted of nothing but adults. Of course, you do have to actually ENTERTAIN them and sculpt really GREAT sculptures, all at the same time. You have to WOW both the client and their guests. That is the way to elevate the ART of BALLOON SCULPTING to adults.
If you show up thinking that simplistic balloons and childish banter are enough, then you're wrong. Carl |

Scott,
Robbie Furman makes balloon people out of the people he sees at parties. Oodles of Loodles. That's what it's called. Check it out. |
