The next time you log on to the cups and balls museum, go to the page of early cups. You will see three additions that are quite unusual.
There are three cups that are between 1900 and 3900 years old. There is no evidence that any of them was ever actually used for the cups and balls; however, they are the right size for use as acetabula or their Persian equivalent. One is a genuine Roman acetabulum, a patella cup made of glass. There is an Elamite cup, and there is a cup from the Indus valley region. So, what is the point of having cups in the museum if they can't be proven to have been used for the cups and balls. Simple. It shows that any cup that is about the right size can be used. Our predecessors did not have Sherwood, Paul Fox or P&L cups to work with. They basically worked with what was available. These are three prime examples. I will add a few more in the oncoming weeks. To reach the early cups page, click on the browser button for Regular Cups. The page tha comes up has a listing for Early Cups. Click on that, and you will find all sorts of neat things.

These are really great additions to the Museum, Bill. Once again you are to be commended for all your research, your collection, and most of all for sharing it so freely with everyone.
Magic is where you find it.....

It is my pleasure.
Posted: Sep 23, 2010 3:40pm BTW, these cups are older than Pete Biro. Heck, they are even older than John Calvert!

Beautiful! Is there enough trace of the pattern on the Elamite cup to reproduce it?
Very few intact examples are shown on the internet. The M.F.A. in Boston has a good collection from the region.

Amazingly, the pattern shows up better in the photographs than it does under ordinary light. However, it's not difficult to get an idea of how they actually looked.

Been out of town, just back. I wondered where my early sets of cups wound up.

Bill Palmer’s Cups and Balls Museum is our Smithsonian Institute, National Archives, Library of Congress and Museum of Natural History; all in one place, open 24/7. Perhaps no one else in the history of our Magic has created this kind of academic and artistic habitat dedicated to the amazing Cups.
