I have been asked to do some walkaround at the Xmas party for the Airforce. They have offered to pay me for my service which normally is fine but I also work within the same Unit/Company that the party is for... I want to start performing more more money so I am not sure what to charge... Any thoughts?

It's really up to you.
Suggestion. Charge $__.00 per hour for the first hour or two and if it's longer up the ante for the extra hours. The longer the gig the harder it can get. |

Re-evaluate what you normally charge (or will normally charge) then offer to do the military gig for half that price. Everybody wins, you make some money, establish your going price, and your buddies get a great show for half-price...

AS far as noramlly charge, it has been a long time since I did do a paying gig for walk around. Last time was over ten years ago when I was a waiter at the Rainforest Café who also performed magic. So establishing a normal amount is lost on me since I don't really know what is exceptable today.

I get $65/hour with a $100 minimum. I don't know if that's average, or low, but it makes me happy.

Check out the local compotition and see what they will charge for such an event example they charge $400 you can easy charge $250 and explain to them that it would usually be $400 but for them it would be $ ? ?

I wouldn't be suprised if this gig led to several other bookings outside your unit / base, for which you could charge a 'proper' rate. As a UK part timer, I cannot offer advice on fees. If you do not get much help with fees from fellow magicians, why not call round to see how much other entertainers (obviously not high end pros) would charge - e.g. musician, singer etc to get an idea of general price ranges. Anyhow, all just my 2cents / pence - whatever you do, the best of luck. Respectfully Charlie |

Thanks guys for the advice... Ill let ya know if I take it and what I end up charging. Its been offered but still have to see work Status, since the mission comes first. Now to another topic in the same discussion. What do you guys consider to be enough time and effects per table. AGAIN politics come into play only becuase I am Part of the unit. And of course people above me but below others in higher rank will undoubtedly for lack of a better word W#ore me out to the ones above them. So not to spend to much time at one table then the other what are some recomendation?

If you are a member of the Air Force I wouldn't even think of charging to entertain members of the armed forces.
If I was in better health, I'd try to get over to the middle east.

I would side with Pete on this one. The AF does so much for us, the least we can do is help them with free entertainment, especially something we love doing. I would love an opportunity to give back in that way.
Not saying this is what you should do, just my opinion. have a good week, Brittain Bass |

I have to agree with Pete. Are you in the Air Force? I am, and I will be doing magic at my Sq. X-mas party. I did not want to be paid, however, they are going to pay for my ticket for the dinner. Now, I don't know if I would go out and do EVERY squadron party for every other unit, that would be a great deal of time.
I don't do kids shows, but have done them for my squadron children party. They usually don't have a budget of any kind, so charging would be impossible. As far as tricks, just do the same for every table. Sure, you are going to get pulled over at some time to perform for the General/Colonel, but at some point stop, and say you have to move on to everyone else. It happens to me, and they are cool with it. I would pick one or two things special for the big wigs, but other than that, I wouldn't go overboard.
