Hi everybody, I'm interested in learning the one-handed fan with cards. This one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00yi2kJDjOk second 0:04 that is the fan that I want to learn, I've seen many manipulator do it, and it is beautiful. I like this fan because it opens slow, and is very very open.
I'm not talking about the "ugly" one-handed fan which is not as open as the fan on second 0:04. (She does the "ugly" one on second 1:09). I want to learn the "beautiful" one. So, where can I learn it? I can do the one-handed fan but it is not as beautiful as she does it. Her fan is as beautiful and open as when I do it with two hands. So, my other question is, are those special cards for fans or manipulation? can I do that with regular cards? Thanks JCheng |

Most of it involves practice. I remember learning it from the Amateur Magicians Handbook. I believe Jeff McBride might have some dvd's with more instruction on it.

Hi Richard, thanks for your response.
I just saw a video on Youtube from De'vo, and I realized that the grip is different to the normal one-handed fan. Is there any name for that fan? |

Yes, looks like she is using Juliana Chen Manipulation cards, these are available from many magic dealers. Juliana Chen waxes her cards. I am not refering to her new Chen plastic cards, but the cards she 1st sold.
The closest thing I can think of is Lewis Ganson's fan in each hand. It is in the Complete Ganson Teach-In series published by http://www.llpub.com It is part of his double deck interlaced large fan routine. |

Hi wmhegbli thanks for your response,
Here I found another video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qc7-gvOoc......ec_index The fan is at second 0:21 , 0:25 , 1:06 , 1:15 , 1:30. It is a really beautiful fan with one hand, I really want to learn it! |

Fans at :21, :25, 1:06 are nothing more then what we call a powder fans. The cards just gliding across each other. This is very basic card faning. I would assume the guy is using a new deck, they are very slick when you take them from the box.
I suggest you get the Jeff McBride DVDs on Card Manipulation. He covers all the basics. The rest is a lot of practice. |

Think of it this way: You make a traditional thumb fan. Then you close the fan using the standard one-hand close technique. Once the fan is closed, reverse the finger movements used to close the fan to re-open it.
This technique can be used to make a one-hand color changing fan. Holding the deck in the left hand with the backs toward the audience, fan the back hand half of the deck into a fan, leaving half the deck at the front unfanned. Reverse fan the stock that is toward you. Since the backs of the cards are toward the audience, the audience will not see the reverse-fanned stock. They see only the first fan. After a slight pause, the left fingers do the one hand close, which brings the hidden fan into view, effecting a surprising one-hand color changing can. I can't recall if any of the card manipulation tapes (McBride, Shimada, Lancaster) showed this color change. I did include it on the video I produced back in the 1980's. I can't remember where I first learned it. Possibly the Dodson or Love book on fanning. BTW, a very nice fan flourish is what Dodson called "The Buzz Saw Fan." I don't recall ever seeing anyone but myself do it. It needs to be done fairly close to the audience because it is a startling change of a fan showing only the red indices into a fan showing only black indices. If you assemble a mixed fanning deck from two separate and contrasting back design decks, you might be able get an effective "Buzz Saw" change using the backs instead of the faces. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez
