So, Im just curious if anyone else has had this problem because I want to be sure its behavioral and not a sign of illness.
My big millitary has always been a BIG millitary. I'm pretty sure his instincts re all alpha. It took some time to convince him that I was the biggest flock member and the proper Alpha in our house. I haven't had a lot of time to interact with him in the past few months so I made some time yesterday. He acted very agressive towards me and we ended up having towel-time after he bit my hand while "up". After that he calmed down some though he still tried to push the limits and I had to do the "towel threat" (picking it up with my free hand) one more time before he became totally compliant. The only other change is that we have been breaking him of his tendency to shout in general, and especially while we are on the phone, by covering his cage for time-outs. That seems to have been working well, but is it possible hes taking the stress out in other ways now?

Cyberqat I have an african grey! I know that without the proper time and attention they can be a handful! one rule with greys donno if this holds up to macaws is that its on their terms but you need to be the flock leader! Always announce your intentions to them! with my grey we always talk to her, telling her whats ok and whats not! just like a dog they need to know the word NO! with birds they need to learn the STEP up or up up command to go on your forearm! always reward for good behavior! toweling a bird can frighten the bird and make things worse! when the bird is in the cage sit beside the cage read to him talk to him sing to him tell him your intentions and work with him through the cage! Stress can play mean roles in birds! screaming and lashing out is a sign for lack of attention! when I got my grey I sat beside her talked to her spoke to her like a human being telling her what I am doing and rewarding her! and before I knew it we have a bond now that is unbreakable! feel free to pm me if you need to!

Thnaks. I feel a bit guilty that I havetn had as much time fro him the past few months. This is definitely a regression in his behavior. He's normally a very calm and loving bird.
Guess we just need more time together.

You are welcome! even if you don't spend time together holding him etc just walk around the house talking to him as if he is a human being let him know what you are doing and you will see a BIG difference!

Cyberqat,
If you clip his wings, just the first 7, he should calm down and then he will know who the Alpha bird is, not him. Whenever my B&G gets that way, I towel her, clip her wings, trim her nails and she is a different parrot.. Hope this helps.. Bill |

Yeah all our hookbills are easier to handle when their wings are clipped and he's probably due.
Still this one is also my fault because he usually doesn't get so nasty even with full wings. I also made another mistake, going over the event in my head. He made aggressive moves and I pushed it and made him step up anyway. Working with him more again and the other night he did the same thing so I just walked away. he called after me but I didn't respond. When I came back 10 minuets later he was ready to behave. Sometimes, you need to let them "win" a bit. When he found winning the immediate argument wasn't satisfying, he was willing to drop it
